Phillip Lee Savage, 53, of Marble Falls, Texas, made his last inappropriate and probably sarcastic comment on August 19, 2018 with his family and friends by his side. Phil burst in this world on October 15, 1964 in Hammond, Indiana to Glenn and Patricia (Courneya) Savage, the fourth of five boys. The family got to Texas as fast as they could in the early 1970’s where the bigger than life Savage clan began to leave their mark and many stories. Phil loved and was devoted to his parents and brothers, his original “unit".
Although a less than average life span, Phil did not live an average life. Phil loved a fresh can of Skoal, Zebra Cakes, any flick John Wayne was in, his friends, and Shannon Lea Maksche….. and not necessarily in that order. He hated liver and onions and hypocrites. But oh how he loved to tell stories, and you could be sure at least 80 percent of every one of them was true! Phil married his true love Shannon Lea Maksche on September 8, 1984 in Stephenville, Texas. Phil and Shannon have two children, Christopher born in 1987, and Katelynn born in 1989. Team Savage became his new “unit” to which he gave his love and devotion.
Phil proudly served in the US Army for over 4 years, as a gunner on the M1A1 Abrams tank during the Gulf War. He was assigned to the Bravo Company, 4th Battalion, 66th Armor division. He began his service in El Paso, TX where he remained for one year. He was transferred to Aschaffenburg, Germany for 3 years which during that time he was deployed to Iraq. After the end of the war, Phil and Shannon moved their family back to the states in August 1991. He loved serving his country and lived his life to protect those he loved every single day of his third “unit” experience.
Phil is preceded in death by his brother Rick Savage, and brother Glenn Savage. He is survived by his parents Glenn and Patricia Savage of Marble Falls, Mother-In-Law Virginia Robbins, adoring wife Shannon Savage of Marble Falls, son Christopher Savage, wife Casey and granddaughter Isla (who he loved more than John Wayne and Zebra Cakes), of Marble Falls, daughter Katelynn Savage of San Antonio, brother Mike Savage and wife Melinda of Marble Falls, brother Steve Savage and wife Robin of Salado, sister-in-law Dianne McClure of Cedar Park, along with numerous nephews and nieces and cousins.
There will be no viewing since his family refuses to honor his request to have him standing in the corner of the room with a can of beer in his hand and a cigar in his mouth so that he would appear natural to visitors. Family Visitation will be at 2 p.m. on August 24, at the old First Baptist Church, followed by a memorial life celebration at 3 p.m.
Everyone who remembers Phil is asked to celebrate his life in their own way; raising a glass of your favorite beverage in his memory would be quite appropriate. Phil’s honorary Pallbearer’s are Gary Biddy, Bobby Burney, Cord and Galyn Woerner. They have many stories too.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Texas Wounded Warrior Foundation at www.texaswoundedwarrior.com or mailing a check to P.O. Box 13072 Tyler, Texas 75713. Please leave a comment specifying “In Memory of Phil Savage”.
Thank you to all of the wonderful friends and family who have helped and supported us through this long journey, we could not have done any of this without you. Our gratitude can never be expressed. Phil stood watch over all the “units” in his life…. His family, his friends, his military unit and his country. On August 19th, he left his last watch for Shannon to continue. Lookout world, the wife of a soldier is not to ever be underestimated!
Phil was killed when he rushed into a burning pet store to save a litter of yelping, adorable puppies. Or maybe not. We all know how he liked to tell stories.
