Raymond LeRoy Schwinn

Raymond L. Schwinn M.D. passed from this life on the morning of February 3, 2021 in Marble Falls, Texas. Dr. Schwinn was a respected radiologist, and a partner of Radiological Associates of Los Gatos, California, Good Samaritan Hospital, and Los Gatos Center Imaging Mammography at Mission Oaks Hospital. Before he retired from practice in 2006, he was the Radiologist on Duty at El Camino Hospital in Los Gatos. Raymond, or Ray, was born on June 6, 1929 on a farm near Edgeley, North Dakota. He graduated from Edgeley High School. In 1950, he married Alice Elaine Erdelt, and they were married for 67 years. He graduated with his B.S. from University of South Dakota in Vermillion, South Dakota, and was awarded a full scholarship to University of Chicago Medical School, where he graduated with honors in 1959. After graduation, with his wife and a growing family of three girls, Dr. Schwinn joined the United States Navy as a Lieutenant and completed his internship and residency at Oak Knoll Naval Hospital in Oakland, California. He served Military Sea Transport Service duty in the Pacific, before being transferred to Balboa Naval Hospital in San Diego. He completed his specialty in Radiological and Nuclear Medicine at Bethesda Naval Hospital in Maryland. In 1964, he successfully passed his Board of Medicine exams and was transferred to Camp Pendleton in Oceanside, California. There, he and Alice bought their first home, and their now four daughters settled in, while Dr. Schwinn treated marines and sailors returning from the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy in 1967 with the rank of Lieutenant Commander. Dr. Schwinn entered private practice with Radiological Associates in Los Gatos, California, actively practicing from 1967 to 1995. They lived in their beautiful home in the Santa Cruz Mountains for fifty years. Ray was an avid race car driver, private pilot, skier, hunter, reader and dreamer. He particularly loved to golf. He and Alice were long time members of the La Rinconada Country Club, and together traveled and played major courses all over the world. He was gifted with a great and active intelligence, and could carry on informed conversations on almost any topic. Preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Alice Elaine Schwinn, and his daughter, Nancy Schwinn Davis. He is survived by his daughters: Jill Schwinn, Julie Carpenter (Richard), Alice Spanjersberg (Bart), sister, Vernida Grant, second wife Carol Ann Crofts, Grandchildren: Rachel DeSantis (Stephen), Sean de la Torre (Candace), Paul de la Torre (Sarah), Christine de la Torre, Bart Spanjersberg, Chloe Spanjersberg, Devin Spanjersberg, Ella Spanjersberg, and Meagan Davis. Great-grandchildren: Ryan Wise (Stephanie), Nicole Wise, Alexa Wise, Christian Wise and Gavin de la Torre, and one Great-great-grandchild: Jane Frances Wise.
