A celebration of life will be held at University Christian Church in Fort Worth on Friday, December 28, 2018 at 11:00 AM. Memorials may be made to the General Endowment of University Christian Church.
Dick was born on Christmas Day in 1936 to Carl and Eleanor Holmes in Fort Worth, Texas. A graduate of RL Paschal High School, the then Principal, OD Wyatt, was happy to see Dick and his buddies move onto College. Thanking them at Graduation for keeping him on his game, he described them as a “mischievous and lively bunch.” He attended Schreiner University for a year before moving back to Fort Worth and making Texas Christian University his home. The call from the Military interrupted his college days and he dutifully affiliated with the US Army Reserves. He served for two years, receiving his basic training at Fort Chaffee, Arkansas. He was stationed at Fort Ord in Monterey Bay, California. While on leave in 1959, he married his high school sweetheart, Mary Virginia Painter, in the Chapel at UCC. Ginny moved to California until he finished his commitment in the Army in 1960 when they moved home. Dick went into the Insurance business while working towards his degree by taking night classes at TCU. He later was persuaded to join his mother-in-law, Helen Painter, in the Real Estate business. At Helen Painter Group Realtors, Dick dedicated 45 years serving his clients and teaching countless Realtors patience, perseverance, problem solving and the importance of listening. He served as the President of the Greater Fort Worth Association of Realtors in 1980 and served on countless Texas Association of Realtors committees and as a Director. Dick and Ginny had two children, Cathy and Greg. University Christian Church was central in Dick and his family’s life. He encouraged participation knowing how critical Christ’s foundation is to our lives. Here he volunteered in Children’s Ministry and Youth Ministry. He served on Building and Grounds and Finance as a Deacon and an Elder. Dick’s home was always open and many were greeted by his warmth and humor. Golf was a passion of his and he loved playing at his home course so rich with history and famous golfers who had traversed those same fairways that he enjoyed as a member of Colonial Country Club. After 44 years of marriage, Dick’s Ginny died unexpectedly changing the landscape and his world. God, however, rewarded his good and faithful servant with a second love, Marsha. Both widowed, they married 14 years ago and were constant companions. They traveled before illness made traveling impossible. She cared for him with kindness and love and he did likewise. After many years of declining health, Parkinsons and Lung Cancer took his life. Dick was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Eleanor Holmes, his stillborn sister, Margaret, and first wife Ginny.
Survived by wife Marsha, children Cathy Taylor and husband, Tim, Greg Holmes and wife Paige, bonus children Jennifer Scheiffer and husband Steven, AJ Tolliver and wife Adrianna, Mary Ellen Maxfield and husband John, grandchildren Caroline Shivers, Katie Holmes, Mary Ashley Holmes, Grant Taylor and wife Karen, Adam Taylor, Grace Ballard and husband Graham, Kate Team and husband Craig, Eliza Scheiffer, Nicole Tolliver, Natalie Tolliver and Joey Tolliver and great-grandchildren Arctica White, Helena Ballard, Austin Taylor, Tillman Ballard and Margaret Team.
