She was born to William and Ruth Fink in Abilene, Texas, and later her family moved to Midland, Texas, where she was raised. She always had an affinity for music. In childhood, she began studying to be a concert pianist, then expanded her talent by taking up the flute for the high school band. Then in adulthood, she learned the banjo to play alongside her brother Bill around the campfire.
Shirley attended Texas Tech University, ultimately meeting the love of her life, Richard Montgomery. They married in Lubbock, Texas, and started their life together. After two years, they had their daughter, Stacy. Wanting to be closer to the Texas hill country, they moved to Austin, Texas, where they were blessed with two sons, Jason Montgomery and Michael Montgomery.
After over 20 years living in the Austin area, they moved to Burnet, Texas, fulfilling their desire to live and enjoy retirement on Lake Buchanan. She spent many years enjoying the lake, boat rides, fishing, and beautiful sunsets on their deck. After the passing of her husband of 37 years, she moved to the Meadowlakes community to be closer to friends and her art guild.
Shirley loved nurturing a wondrous variety of plants and beautiful flowers in her gardens with her faithful dogs at her side. She enjoyed her late-found skill of painting so emphatically, taking what started as a hobby to a professional level, depicting nature's beauty in landscapes. In her downtime, she was usually found reading or watching British murder mysteries (and recently Korean dramas), or enjoying taking morning or evening drives behind the wheel of her golf cart, but always with a Dr Pepper Zero at hand. She was a member of the Highland Art Guild & Gallery of Marble Falls for many years, where she sold her paintings as well as Prellop Fine Art Gallery in Salado, Texas.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Richard, her son Jason, her parents, William and Ruth Fink, her siblings, Patsy and her husband, Leroy White, Jean Wright, Bill and his wife, Janelle Fink.
Shirley is survived and beloved by her; daughter and son-in-law, Stacy and Allan Davis; son, Michael Montgomery; grandchildren, Madeline Davis, Lauren and her husband, Jon Jenson. As well as numerous cousins, nephews, nieces, friends, and the many others (of no relation) that also affectionately referred to her as Mom. She will be dearly missed by all that came to know her.
The family would like to extend their utmost gratitude to all the doctors and nurses in the CVICU department at Austin Heart Central at the Heart Hospital of Austin for their incredible service and support to the family during a difficult time.
Viewing will be held on Thursday, September 25th from 5-7 p.m. at Clements-Wilcox Funeral Home, Marble Falls. Services will be held Friday, September 26th at 10 a.m. at the Clements-Wilcox Funeral Home, and then a graveside service will be held at Lakeland Hills Memorial Park in Burnet, Texas.
