Twyla Faye Carlson Tolar was born January 14, 1933, on a cold and snowy day in Valpariso, NE to Oscar and Edna Carlson. She passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 9, 2011. Her family moved to Lincoln, NE at an early age, where she attended public schools and the University of Nebraska, where she was a proud Kappa Delta.
Twy met her future husband, Lieutenant Roland J. Tolar on a blind date which subsequently led to 53 wonderful years of marriage. Twy loved the role of career Air Force wife and was a leader in the Air Force Wives Club, American Red Cross, and many social clubs. It takes a special woman to be a military wife, basically raising the family alone, and enduring many separations and relocations. Twy formed many special, lifelong relationships with military families and was the consummate military wife. Upon Ro’s retirement, the family relocated to Texas, initially in Houston, then Austin and finally, Horseshoe Bay-which Twy and Ro refer to as Heaven on Earth.
After raising three fine children, Scott Bradley, Mark Gregory and Kimberly Ann, Twy went to work at the Austin American Statesman in the Classified Ads Section. After a brief time, she began her 17 year career at The University of Texas at Austin, Office of Accounting, eventually assuming a senior position in the Student Loan Section.
In 1991, Twy retired from UT Austin and moved permanently to Horseshoe Bay. Because of her outgoing personality and willingness to be a loyal friend, she developed many beautiful friendships. Twy and Ro viewed retirement as a golden opportunity to travel to many foreign countries, cruising and meeting many beautiful people. However, advancing age and illnesses resulted in their last cruise in April of 2011. It was discovered that Twy had terminal cancer and subsequently entered Hospice Seton Highland Lakes which provided loving care and pain free medical attention. Twy’s final wish was to be at home in Horseshoe Bay, where she spent her final hours surrounded by her loving family.
Twy was preceded in death by her parents, Oscar and Edna Carlson, her son, Scott Bradley, and many relatives. She is survived by her loving husband Roland of Horseshoe Bay; her son Mark Gregory, wife Amy, and grandson Cory; daughter Kim Kizer, husband David and granddaughter Shelby, all of Austin.
Visitation will be Thursday, August 11, 2011 from 6:00 PM-8:00 p.m. at Clements-Wilcox Funeral Home, 1805 Hwy 281 N, Marble Falls. Interment service will be held on Friday, August 12, 2011 at Lakeland Hills Cemetery, located on Park Road 4 at 10:00 a.m. All are welcomed to attend. A service of Praise and Celebration for Twy’s life will follow at The Church at Horseshoe Bay at 11:30 a.m.
The family wishes to thank all of Twy’s wonderful friends-especially, but not limited to, the four “B’s” Bunco, Bridge, Bingo, and the Birthday Group! They would also like to thank Seton Highland Lakes Hospice for their loving care and personal attention during this difficult time. Our gratitude is also extended to EMS personnel for their devoted service to the community. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Seton Highland Lakes Hospice or the American Cancer Society.
