Arthur (John) Oberg died peacefully in Naples, FL on January 11, 2024, at 94 years old. John was born and raised in Minneapolis, MN as the only child of Arthur and Vinette Oberg. He received a BS from University of MN and a MS from Stanford. John was in the Navy for 3 years and held the position of Executive Officer of the USS Reclaimer in the Korean War and was discharged honorably. He worked at Honeywell Inc. as a Development Engineer and then as Systems Engineer and Marketing Manager at FMC Corporation for 20 years.
John had a passion and talent for music and sang in Episcopal churches throughout most of his life. He was a founding member of St Alban’s Episcopal Church in Edina, MN and worked there as the volunteer Director of Music for 32 years, directing the choir, and playing the organ.
John met the love of his life, Carol, while singing in a choir during the Christmas season in Honolulu while on leave from military duties. They fell in love and were married on July 18, 1954, and were happily married until Carol passed away in 2014.
They lived in Minnesota until 1989 and moved to their sunny paradise in Marco Island. John enjoyed being on the water and was an avid fisherman on the lakes in MN and in the Gulf of Mexico. They loved to entertain their many church friends and family with boat rides and picnic lunches on the Gulf.
John continued his music passion at St Marks and was the volunteer choir director there for seven years. He and Carol continued to be active in the choir which was something they both loved.
John is survived by his children, David (Suzanne), and Debra (Chris) Christidis and grandchildren, Ethan, Ike (Thea), Hallie, Anja, Alex, and Sophia.
In honor of John’s life, a service will be held at St Mark’s Episcopal Church in Marco Island on January 17, 2024, at 12 noon. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to St Mark’s Episcopal Church, 1101 North Collier Blvd, Marco Island, FL 34145.
