OBITUARY

Carmela Abbate

August 25, 1929June 24, 2020

Carmela Abbate (nee Caruso) passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family and caretakers on June 24, 2020 at her home on Marco Island, Florida. Previously she had resided in Elizabeth, NJ.

Born in Acquappesa, Calabria, Italy; Carmela came to the United States in 1949 and worked as a seamstress. She returned to Italy to marry her sweetheart Gino Abbate in October of 1954. Together they returned to the United States and raised a family.

Carmela took great pride in her family. She hosted many family gatherings and she loved to cook. No one left her home hungry. Making tomato sauce was a joy and every August, the family would gather to prepare and jar fresh tomatoes. She kept a garden where she grew fresh vegetables for traditional Italian specialties she served to her guests.

Carmela was a devout Catholic and a member of San Marco Church. Her devotion to The Blessed Mother, Padre Pio and St. Benedict set an example for her family. She was a life-long member of the Societe’ S. Benedetto. She was a peacemaker among her family and keeping the family together was important to Carmela. She is remembered by her family and friends as a most caring and generous Mother, Grandmother, Aunt and Friend.

Gino and Carmela celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a family cruise in 2004. All of their children and grandchildren were with them for this joyous occasion.

The family would like to thank Maggie Metelluss and Manoune Charles for the many years of devoted and loving care of our Mother and Grandmother.

Carmela was predeceased by her beloved husband Gino Abbate Sr, her brothers Dominic, Louis, her sister Loretta and her parents Dominic and Rose Caruso.

She is survived by four children; Ralph Abbate and his wife Cathy and their children Ralph Jr, Michael, Caitlin; Gino Abbate Jr. and his wife Theresa and his children Joseph, Christina, Gino III, Anthony, Angelina; Patricia Linda Feola and her husband Mark and their children Mark Jr, and Vanessa; Michael Abbate and his wife, CarolAnn and their children Samantha and Vincent. In addition to her children and grandchildren, she is survived by her brothers Augustine Caruso, Annandale, NJ and Giovanni Caruso of Acquappesa, Italy.

My deepest condolences to the Abbate & Feola Family.

Mama - You have always held a very special place in our hearts. Thank you for all your love & kindness and for teaching me some of your cooking secrets. We had pastina aka(Carmela's pastina) in your honor for dinner the other nite. As I smashed the garlic and then cleaned up the skin from the floor I swear you were with me.

We love you Mama and you will never be forgotten - may you rest in peace in Gods arms! Love you! Cindy & Christina

So many great memories with Carmela. Walking and shopping on 5th Ave. And of course lunch.. Traveling to Italy and the cruise. So much fun. The family gatherings both in NJ and Florida.. Her friendship with my parents.. (My father's 2nd cousin) and with my mother especially. Not to mention the great food and our camomile tea rituals. She will always be in my heart. God bless her and her family

I was so sad to hear of my godmother’s passing. I remember Carmela as a woman who was always kind and generous; she made a point to always remember my birthday, and think of me at Christmas time. She made me feel special, and loved.

I remember my parents’ deep friendship with Carmela and her husband, Gino. They would spend time together, as well as with her sister, Loretta, her family and all the Benedict Society paisans.

If my mother Celeste could understand what happened, I know she would be devastated to hear that her friend was no longer with us. I know that my father, Domenico, Carmela, Gino, and all the other paisans are in heaven now, sharing a glass of wine and toasting old times.

My heart and prayers goes out to the family. Carmela will forever be in my heart.

Nancy and I were sad to hear of Carmela's passing.

Personally, I have many happy memories of Carmela as I spent many hours in the Abbate household in my younger years. Family dinners, sandwiches for fishing trips and always acceptance and love from Carmela, something I will always remember.

A few years back Nancy and I visited Carmela on Marco Island and she prepared dinner for us as she told us the secret of her great cooking, everything was '"..made with love and medicine (oregano)...". Even today when we prepare dinner and it includes oregano, we say'... time to add the medicine'. Godspeed Carmela and our deepest condolences and prayers to the Abbate and Caruso families.
