Clayton Burroughs

May 16, 1990July 13, 2012

Much too soon a young unsung hero was taken from us tragically on July 13, 2012, and will be forever missed by his family and friends. Clayton Rhodes Burroughs, a business management student at Ave Maria University, was born on May 16, 1990 in Jacksonville, Florida. He lived in Ponte Vedre, Florida until his family moved to Glen Ridge, New Jersey in 1995. He graduated high school from Glen Ridge High School where he was a tight end and long snapper on the school’s football team. In 2008 Marco Island became his home. Clay’s charisma drew people to him wherever he went and he made an impact on everyone he met. He mentored young people as a camp counselor at the Marco YMCA. As a student at Ave Maria, he continued his love of football playing linebacker for the team. He loved dancing and could often be found at DaVinci’s on a Friday or Saturday night on the dance floor surrounded by people. Clay never said no to any request for help and always gave 110% of himself. He is remembered as funny, witty and a big teddy bear who always seemed to know when someone needed one of his big hugs. His friends loved him and he was adored by all of his family, which included his mother, Paige Rhodes, his father, Clark Burroughs, his brother, Connor Burroughs, his maternal grandfather, Donald “Dusty” Rhodes, his maternal grandmother, Nancy Rhodes, his paternal grandfather, John D. Burroughs, his paternal grandmother, Arlene Burroughs, his uncle, Donny Rhodes (Stacey), his aunt, Cameron Tucker (Jamey), his great-uncle, David Crook (Vanda), his great-aunt Sue Ferdinand, his great-aunt, Molly Tonaro (Ed), his great-aunt, Carol Rhodes and his cousins, Lauren Steed, Delaney Tucker, Trey Tucker, Maddie Rhodes and Allie Rhodes. Services will be held on Monday, July 16, 2012 at 5:00 p.m. at the Marco Presbyterian Church, 875 W. Elkcam Circle, Marco Island, Florida. Arrangements are with Hodges-Josberger Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a scholarship fund in Clay’s name to benefit the football program at Glen Ridge High School.

Clay...What can I say? I hope your wonderful spirit continues to surprise everyone on the spur of the moment as it always did here on earth. Hopefully the Good Lord himself will work a few"trick" plays through you for the benefit of the many broken hearts of the world. Let your warm wonderful smile and compassion shine on us all forever!

Dearest Clay,

I was six years old when I first met you. It was second grade and we had Ms. Miller together. It was then, almost twenty years ago that you became a life long friend and and the first boy I ever liked. I don't know if I was ever able to tell you that.

I'm so grateful to be able to consider you a friend. I'll never forget the 2am car ride with Mike, Pat, and Trish when you got out at an intersection and danced to "Yo" or the long stroll on the boardwalk when we talked about life and love.

You'll forever be in my heart.

Over the years that we saw Clay mature, he went from a child to a man. His smile will stay with us as will his outgoing nature. We spent many hours hanging on the lanai or swimming in the pool, playing darts or shooting pool; Clay was always there, laughing and participating with the "adults," always a pleasure for us. He will be missed and we wish all of his family our heartfelt condolences.

My dear sweet Clay
It's hard to believe that you won't be walking through our front door on your annual visit to Glen Ridge this summer. The whole town is mourning the loss of one of it's favorite sons. We've geen thinking of you and your mom constantly, and hope our many wonderful memories will help us through this immense sadness. Sleep tight! XOXO The Savino Family

Clay was one of the friendliest fellas at Ave Maria University. He used to always make fun of my British accent. I can still hear him now "ello Hermione, how's Hogwarts?" He was and will always be Crabbe to me. I will miss our silly Harry Potter banter. He was so full of energy, outgoing and always made me laugh. I will miss him. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this sad time.
