He was born June 26, 1946 in Selma, Alabama, the son of the late Florence Davis and Harry Buddig Spence. He was the third of five children.
He graduated from Florida State University in 1968, where he played baseball, was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity, and majored in criminal justice. He married Martha Elaine Inglis, his devoted wife of 52 years, November 29th 1968 in Miami Springs, Florida.
He worked for the Drug Enforcement Administration for 35 years, retiring in 2003. He served as a special agent for 17 years in Miami, Florida and then served in leadership positions at posts in Birmingham, Alabama, Jackson, Mississippi, Washington, DC, and Montgomery Alabama.
Hank loved fishing and boating and all things on the water. He especially loved spending time at Lake Logan Martin in his home state of Alabama. He had many friends throughout the years who he treasured keeping up with and enjoyed visits and travelling with many of them in his retirement years. Hank always had a steadfast faith and belief in Christ and loved discussing this with his dear friend Dr. Dixon Mitchell and others in a wonderful Bible study we had for several years with friends in Marco. The joys of his life were his grandchildren and he loved keeping up with them and all of their activities. He supported them in any endeavor that would insure they had the best education possible and in the past few months his major concern was that he would not be able to see them grow up.
He is survived by his wife Martha (Marti) Spence, daughter and son-in-law Tracy Spence and Javier Inon of Denver, Colorado; daughter and son-in-law Susan and Michael Denning of Weston, Fl; daughter Sarah Spence of Stuttgart, Germany; grandchildren Katherine and Austin Denning of Weston, Fl and Nicolas Inon-Spence of Denver Colorado; sisters Christina Spence of Oakland, California; sister Sally Engler (Lee) of Pittsboro, North Carolina; brother-in-law William Krulak (Sharon) of Vero Beach, Fl; brother-in-law William Gunn of Austin,Texas; brother-in-law James Inglis (Donna) of Weston, Fl; nieces Amy Krulak (Alastair), Ceecy Gunn Robinson(George),William Krulak (Debi), Robert Boyle(Cori), Davis Boyle(Val), Mallory Frakes(Thomas), and Hannah Smith, Deborah Inglis Maddox, Linda Inglis Carter (Jim) and many great nieces and nephews and cousins.
