James R. “Jim” Hansen, 90, of Marco Island peacefully passed away at home on Tuesday, May 23, 2023. Originally from Tulsa, Jim spent many years in Beaumont, San Antonio, and Atlanta before marrying his wife of 18 years, Mary Ann, and moving to Marco Island. He was born June 5, 1932 to Fred and Mildred Hansen.
Jim’s Army service in the early 1950’s was spent in El Paso, TX as a weapons instructor. It was there he met and married Janet Ann Driscoll. They had three sons. Later, after Janet’s death, Jim married Mary Livingston Goren of Atlanta. Mary died on their twentieth anniversary. Three years later in 2004, while at a high school reunion in Tulsa, a mutual friend gave him Mary Ann’s phone number. They married May 7th, 2005 and became snowbirds between Atlanta and Marco.
Following his military service, Jim moved to Tulsa and worked as a plumber for his father’s company. Later, he became a branch manager at the Crane Supply Company. Next, Jim was a seven-state representative for a plumbing and fire sprinkler company in Atlanta, retiring at 70.
Jim highly enjoyed singing and dancing and was an accomplished do-it-yourselfer.
His mechanical skills ranged from designing a house and a deck on another house, to remediating a drainage issue. “There was never a project Dad wouldn’t tackle or a tool he wasn’t eager to buy”, according to his son.
Jim’s father Fred sang opera as a hobby. He instilled in his children a love of music which Jim expressed in later years by serving as a cantor in his churches in Atlanta and Marco Island. Jim had a talent for dancing, especially dances of the 40’s and 50’s. He and Mary Ann could often be seen at Maggiano’s in Buckhead jitterbugging between the tables near the piano bar.
Survivors include his beloved wife, Mary Ann; sons: Daniel Hansen (Mary) of San Antonio,TX, Carl Hansen (Delma) of Euless, TX, and Kurt Hansen (Becky) of Roswell, GA, and his sister Lynnell Nelson Hyman of Escondido, CA. Jim has been blessed with wonderful grandchildren: Laurel Hansen, Joseph Hansen, Gracie Hansen, and Colleen Hansen and five adorable great-grandchildren. Jim also received much love and joy from the children, “grands” and “great-grands” of his blended family.
In addition to his first two wives and his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his sister, Lorraine Nelson and his brothers Robert and Donald Hansen.
Jim’s family expresses deep gratitude to Avow Hospice of Naples for their outstanding loving care.
