John James, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, passed away on Thursday, June 5, 2025, holding hands with his wife and the love of his life, Emily.
Born and raised in Winter Haven, Florida, John was known for his thoughtful wisdom, sense of humor, honorable judgment, and compassionate nature.
John loved both reading and playing golf, often discussing books and authors with his son Jeff, and treasured the time spent playing golf with his daughter Mary at The Hideout Golf Club. He also deeply cherished the camaraderie of his golf group at Island Country Club, where he shot his age an amazing 68 times!
However, nothing mattered more to John than his family. He is survived by Emily with whom he shared 58 years of marriage with many cherished memories. John was incredibly proud of their two adult children, Mary James Reasoner (Chris) and Jeff James (Liz), and were blessed with five grandchildren: Samantha, Madison, Hannah, Alice, and John, and two great-grandchildren, Murray and Weston. He also leaves behind his two sisters, Sally Baggett and Mary Hamilton.
John had a brilliant and successful career as a banking executive, beginning in Atlanta, Georgia and later in SW Florida, after returning to their home state where he and Emily met while students at Florida State University.
Deeply committed to giving back to the community, his wise guidance is evident over the 30 years he devoted to this area. From serving on the Chamber’s EDC Coalition- State and Federal Governance committee, and assuring cultural venues were a part of the area. John was also involved in the Imaginarium Children’s Science Center, The Collier Education Foundation, and the Garden of Hope and Courage among others.
John lived a full and joyful life, and will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, and quick wit. His family will always have heartfelt gratitude for his steadfast devotion and un-ending love.
