Joseph Andrew Calzone, II
July 19, 1938 to February 20, 2023
It is with immense sadness that we share the passing of Joe Calzone (84), following a short, but courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Joe departed Earth surrounded by love and family at his home in Marco Island, FL.
Joe was born in Methuen, MA to Joseph and Helen Calzone. He attended St. Mary’s High School in Milford, MA and achieved his BS in Electrical Engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, where he joined the ROTC program and was an active member of the SAE fraternity. Upon graduation in 1962, he married his sweetheart Audrey Abbiuso. Joe enlisted in the US Army as a second Lieutenant and was stationed in Mannheim, West Germany where he and Audrey began their lifelong adventure of love, family, and travel.
In 1963, their first son was born in Germany - Joseph III (Melanie). Upon return to the US, Joe continued to serve his country with pride as a member of the US Army Reserves until 1967. Joe began his 32 year career with General Electric’s Aerospace Division in Utica, NY while he simultaneously earned his Master’s Degree from Syracuse University and the Calzone family continued to grow. Sons Craig (Jennifer) and Mark (Michelle) born in 1965 and 1967, followed by their only daughter, Cindy in 1969. Joe considered his family his greatest accomplishment, especially his grandchildren. He was an incredible role model and family was his number one priority. This ideology has transcended through generations and his legacy will endure.
Joe had many interests and hobbies that he was anxious to share with his family. Camping, ski trips, and summers at the family cottage in Clayton, NY have brought fond memories for his children. Joe loved jazz music, history, fishing, investing, home improvement, golf, tennis, boating and volunteerism, the Boston Red Sox and his sweet dog, Theodore “Teddy” Williams. Each of Joe’s grandchildren have their own special memories of Grandpa.
In 1997, Joe and Audrey sold their long-time home in Whitesboro, NY and began dividing time between their new home in Marco Island, FL and their cherished cottage in the 1000 Islands. Retirement did not slow Joe down. His avid love for learning and travel led him to explore the world, far and wide, leading to many benefits for family and friends. He prepared our taxes, taught the grandchildren boating safety, and kept us all in line! He was a member of the Coast Guard Auxillary for 15 years, volunteered at the Antique Boat Museum and Opera House in Clayton, NY, taught Boating Safety and Captains Courses in NY and FL and most recently enjoyed a 5-star rating as an Uber driver on Marco Island.
Joe will be remembered for his integrity, intelligence, love for family and friends, and at times, his short fuse. He had an impact on so many and was always eager to lend a hand. He will be missed by those left behind, his adored wife and children, and especially his grandchildren, Joseph “Andrew” IV (Christine), Alex (Sarah), Caylene (Tim), Corrine (Evan), Anna (Sheena), Nick (Sydney), Sadie (Ian), Cole (Shelby) and Morgan.
When Heaven opened its gates to Joe, his parents Joe and Helen, brother Freddie, who he lost way too early and special grandson Josh were there to welcome him home.
Joe’s family would like to express their most sincere gratitude to Avow Hospice of Naples who provided immense comfort and meticulously and lovingly walked Joe and his family through his final weeks on Earth. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Avow in Joe’s memory.
