Born in Beirut, Lebanon on April 17, 1929, Moufid was the eldest child of Michel Mitri and Mona Golmieh. Moufid received the French Bacalaureat of Philosophy and Science in 1946, then attended St. Joseph University Faculty of Medicine in Beirut, where he received his MD degree in 1953. He was fluent in three languages: Arabic, French and English.
Moufid married the love of his life, Eva Abiadal, in 1955, and together they came to the United States where he completed residency in Surgery. He spent four years training in General Surgery in Washington DC and New York, and three years training in Thoracic Surgery at McGill University, Montreal Childrens Hospital in Montreal, Canada.
In 1963, they returned to the United States where he started his career as Chief of Surgery at the VA Hospital in Poplar Bluff, Missouri. In 1966 they moved to Michigan where he was on the Faculty of Wayne State University Medical School before starting his private practice in Rochester, Michigan at Crittenton Hospital. He was on the staff of Crittenton Hospital, St. Joseph Mercy Hospital Pontiac, Beaumont Hospital Troy, and Pontiac General Hospital. He was a Thoracic and Vascular Surgeon for over 40 years. And those hands have saved thousands of lives.
Dr. Mitri was a member of the Michigan State Medical Society and the Oakland County Medical Society. He served as Chief of Surgery and Chief of Staff at Crittenton Hospital, and as President of the Michigan Society of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeons. He was Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and Member of the American Association of Thoracic Surgery.
Throughout his career as a thoracic and vascular surgeon, Dr. Mitri was highly regarded by his peers, colleagues and patients, and was respected for his expertise, manners and incredible work ethic.
As committed as he was to his medical practice, at the center of Moufid’s life was always an unwavering love of family. He was a wonderful father, grandfather, husband, and friend. He was happiest with his darling Eva by his side, as they shared conversation, discussed issues, toasted with the last sip of wine at dinner, kissed with every new moon, held hands on walks, traveled around the world, celebrated birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, weddings and milestones with their children and grandchildren. More than anything he wanted us all to feel safe and taken care of, to have a good education, to pursue our passions, to be happy, to overcome challenges, to be kind and respectful of
others. Spending time in person and on the phone with relatives and friends in the U.S. and overseas was one of his greatest joys.
He had a great laugh, a spirited voice, a beautiful smile, twinkling eyes and a warm hug. He was exceptionally honest and thoughtful. He loved very deeply and was very deeply loved. He enjoyed social gatherings, good food and fine wine, art shows and classical music, golfing with buddies, debating current events, exploring history, and experimenting with photography and technology. As an extremely generous man of strong faith, he was an active member of Christ Church Cranbrook in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan and St. Marks Episcopal Church in Marco Island, Florida, and was a donor to many national and international charities for children, refugees, and those in need.
We will all miss him and his memory will always be a blessing.
A devoted husband, father, grandfather and uncle, Moufid is survived by his beloved wife Eva, his children Mike, Carol and Irene and her husband Andy, his grandchildren Brendan, Joshua, Eric, Alexandra and Sophia, his sister-in-law Martha, and many nieces and nephews.
Moufid was preceded in death by his siblings Mounah, May, Maha and Mounir.
