Richard F. Bergmann Jr. ( Dick ) passed away May 5, 2012 in Marco Island, FL following a courageous battle with Melanoma. Dick was born in LaGrange, IL – January 2nd, 1926, and lived in Cleveland, OH and Winnetka, IL until leaving for college & enlisting in the US Navy following the attack on Pearl Harbor.
Dick is survived by his sons, Rich Bergmann (Nancy) – San Diego, CA, Peter Bergmann (Nancy) – Indianapolis, IN, Gordon Bergmann (Francine) – Simpsonville, SC, and his 7 grandchildren, Michelle, Katie, Alexandra, Caroline, Cameron, Morgan and Felicia.
Dick lived in Marco Island for the last 35 years, and would summer in the Northern Michigan region of Lake Charlevoix, and his former home in the Indianapolis / Carmel, IN area.
A graduate of Lawrence University in Appleton, WS, Dick moved to Minneapolis, MN following graduation and worked with Link Belt – Machinery & Equipment.
While living in Minneapolis, he met his wife, Doris ( Dolly ) McQueen. When he accepted a transfer to Johannesburg, South Africa, Dolly joined him and they were married in Johannesburg in 1954.
Dick had an action filled career in the Heavy Machinery & Automotive OEM industry, and held tours of duty with Link Belt in Minneapolis, Johannesburg, SA, Chicago, Detroit, Summit, NJ, and finishing his career in Indianapolis, IN with PTC, where he retired as President. Dick spent the last years traveling with his great friend Shirley Thayer of Marco Island, and she provided wonderful care over for him the last 8 months.
An active member of the emerging Marco Island community, he was involved with the Water Commission, Cape Marco Board of Directors, and the vestry at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church.
A Memorial Service will be held at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Marco Island on May 17th, 2012 at 11:00am.
Dick’s favorite charity and his request for memorial is the St. Mark’s Episcopal Church Pre-School for at Risk & Underprivileged Children.
