Richard Kendall Jones

February 3, 1947September 26, 2020

Richard Kendall Jones, age 73, of Marco Island, Florida passed away on Saturday, September 26, 2020. Richard was born February 3, 1947 in Rockaway Beach, New York.

Having spent most of his life on the water one of his greatest joys was always being able to see the horizon, especially while sailing throughout the Bahamas.

Rich was a man of great visions. He always had a backup plan. "Look around and avail yourself with what you have to work with and make it work", He would always say.

He leaves behind a legacy of being "A Good Man". Always fair, honest and a man of his word. You could bank on that. Of a multitude of musings while kayaking, sailing or just lying about in the cockpit of our boat , here are a few:

The wind blows the same for everyone. It's the set of sails that makes the difference.

My soul is getting cold. Warmth is a few degrees away. A pull on the tiller. I'll do that now and I think I'll be ok.

You don't get fat on food for thought.

The key to rational thoughts lies in always remembering how unbelievably lucky you are.

The gears of time turn slowly. They grind exceedingly fine. They turn on one particular tooth at one particular time.

Richard is survived by his loving spouse of 47 years, Glenna Jones; brother Douglas Jones, sister Carol Jones and brother David Jones.

The kindness and compassion shown by Avow Hospice is truly appreciated by the Jones family.

A private Celebration of Life service will be held at a later date.

Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at for the Jones family.

Dear Glenna—I’m so sorry to hear that Rich has passed away. I have such fond memories of greeting both of you early in the morning at the YMCA. You were both an inspiration to me, because of your commitment to exercise and health and your cheerfulness when it was still dark outside.
Rich made the world a better place and I will miss him. My prayers are with you and your family.

From one old sailor to another:
The Ship
I am standing upon the seashore. A ship at my side spreads her white sails in the morning breeze and starts for the blue ocean.
She is an object of beauty and strength and I stand and watch until at last she hangs like a speck of white cloud just where the sea and sky come down to mingle with each other.
Then someone at my side says, there she goes!” Gone Where?
Gone from my sight… that is all.
She is just as large in mast and hull and spar as she was when she left my side and just as able to bear her load of living freight to the place of destination.
Her diminished size is in me, not in her. And just at the moment when someone at my side says, “There she goes!”
There are other eyes watching her coming and other voices ready to take up the glad shout, “There she comes!”

Henry Jackson Van Dyke (1852-1933)
