It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Richard Alan Thomas, devoted spouse, Father, Grandfather, Brother, Uncle, and friend who passed away on February 10th, 2025, in Marco Island, Florida, at the age of 69. Richard was born on January 9th, 1956, in San Pedro, CA.
He will be deeply missed by wife, Dawn Thomas; sons, Alan James Thomas, Cameron Vega-Brightenburg; daughter, Cheyenne Chanterelle; sister, Karole Thomas; brother, Gary Thomas; 4 grandchildren, Marcus Summers, Genora Gonzalez, Docia Gonzalez and Selma Gonzalez; many nieces and nephews and his dearly held friends he called family.
Richard lived his life to its fullest and was the epitome of “work hard, play harder”. He was a man of many talents and passions. Richard was a lifetime music, sports and fishing enthusiast. He found joy in the rhythm of music, often playing the harmonica, attending hundreds of live music events, or listening to blues, rock, jazz, and zydeco. A true sports fan, he spent countless days playing, coaching and watching all levels, especially the Chargers, Padres and his all-time favorite teams, any that featured his favorite athlete, Alan. Richard and his family loved to fish throughout North, Central, South Americas and Australia. His great love of fishing inspired his retirement to Florida where he continued to share his passions with his wife, son, Alan, and friends.
Richard was a man of sharp mind, witty humor, integrity, generosity and zest for life. While his business, life and recreational achievements were many, what truly defined Richard was his steadfast commitment to his own personal development and spiritual growth. He committed over 35 years to seeking a Higher Power in ways that enriched both himself and all those he loved.
Richard was predeceased by father, Otaway Thomas Jr., mother, Catherine Thomas, Brother, Otaway Thomas III, and granddaughter, Rosemary Summers.
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to MD Anderson and Cleveland Clinic Cancer Centers for their care and support.
May he now find the freedom and serenity he sought in the forests, mountains, rivers, oceans and his own gardens. Richard will always be loved and remembered. A private celebration of life will be held in California this spring.
