Thomas Edward Lyng of Winchester Center, CT and Marco Island, FL, passed away suddenly at Physicians Regional Hospital in Naples on January 7, 2024 at the age of 88. He is survived by his loving wife Doris and daughter Sarah, who devoted themselves to his care in his later years, as well as his son Ted, daughter-in-law Muliani, and grandsons Daniel and Matthew.
Born in 1935 in Woodville to Harold Lyng and Nina Seeber, Tom grew up in upstate NY. He attended Cornell University before launching a business career after a stint in Army Intelligence. A hard worker and savvy negotiator, he found success in commercial insurance, eventually becoming a partner in a New York City-based firm that operated across the United States and in Bermuda.
Tom will be remembered for quick wit, dry humor, and steadfast devotion to his family. He would devote endless hours to picking exactly the right beach toys, miniature bulldozers, and other construction equipment for his two grandsons and then helping them make sandcastles on Marco Beach. He never missed an important event like a birthday or graduation even if it meant traveling many thousands of miles.
Tom battled Parkinson's disease in his final years. He did so in his typical style, without complaint and with a gritty toughness that was a model for all who knew him. He will be sorely missed.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later in Florida. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
