Abiywork Nega

Abiywork Nega was born to her father, Ato Nega Girma, and her mother, Yeshi M. Mugdo, on July 28, 1968, at Princess Tsehai Hospital in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Born after five brothers, Abiywork was regarded as a precious gift to her family. From the very beginning, she was surrounded by extraordinary love, affection, and care, growing up in a home where she was deeply cherished.

When she reached school age, she attended Bitwoded Wolde Gabriel Shah School and Prince Wossen Seged School, where she completed her elementary education. She later continued her studies at Abiyot Qirs (Revolution Heritage) Secondary School, graduating in 1986. Continued her education to then earned an Associate Degree from Addis Ababa Commercial College in 1991.

Following her graduation, Abiywork dedicated herself wholeheartedly to her career. From 1991 until her passing, she served with exceptional commitment, integrity, and professionalism across multiple organizations. In 1994, she left Ethiopia to pursue employment opportunities abroad, first working in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, before eventually immigrating to the United States. She later made Atlanta, Georgia, her home, where she continued building a life marked by hard work, faith, and service to others.

While her professional accomplishments were admirable, it was her character that left the greatest impression on those who knew her. Abiywork was a devoted daughter, sister, aunt, and friend whose life reflected unwavering faith in God and genuine love for others. She sought to honor Christ not only through her words but through the way she lived each day. Her kindness, compassion, generosity, humility, forgiveness, and servant's heart were evident in every aspect of her life. She always desired what was best for her family and those she loved.

Although she was not their mother, she lovingly embraced the role of a mother figure to her younger siblings. With unwavering devotion, she nurtured, guided, protected, encouraged, and provided for them, offering unconditional love, wisdom, and support throughout their lives. She became a constant source of strength, comfort, and stability for her family. Whenever difficulties arose, she was the first person everyone turned to, knowing they would find compassion, encouragement, practical help, and wise counsel.

Despite living thousands of miles away from Ethiopia, her heart never left home. Whenever she took vacation from work, she faithfully returned to Ethiopia not to seek recreation or leisure, but to spend precious time with her beloved mother and family. She joyfully sacrificed both her time and her financial resources to care for them, placing their well-being above her own comfort. Her greatest happiness was found in serving those she loved.

Her kindness extended far beyond her family. Friends, colleagues, neighbors, and all who had the privilege of knowing her often spoke of the warmth she brought into every room. She possessed a gentle spirit and a compassionate heart that made others feel welcomed, valued, and genuinely loved. Her comforting smile, humble demeanor, and sincere concern for others reflected the presence of Christ in her life. She treated everyone with respect, dignity, and kindness, regardless of who they were. She lived peacefully with others, avoided conflict, and consistently sought to build people up. She was always willing to help those in need, generously shared what she had with others, and never turned away someone who was hungry or hurting. Giving came naturally to her because love defined who she was.

To her family, however, she was far more than a beloved relative. She was a precious gift from God, their greatest treasure, and a rare jewel whose faith, wisdom, and unconditional love profoundly shaped their lives. Her life was a living testimony of Christ-like love in action. She lived with grace, served with humility, and loved without reservation.

Although her earthly journey has come to an end, her legacy lives on in the countless lives she touched. Her unwavering faith, selfless devotion, generous spirit, and boundless love will continue to inspire all of her families. Though her presence will be deeply missed, her family finds comfort in the blessed assurance that she is now in the eternal presence of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Her memory will forever be cherished, and her life will remain a lasting testimony of faith, hope, and love. The words of our Lord beautifully describe the life she lived:

"Well done, good and faithful servant." — Matthew 25:23

The Scriptures remind us that the length of every person's life is determined by God alone. Though we make plans for our future, the Lord, in His perfect wisdom and sovereign will, calls His beloved children home at the appointed time. On Hamle 16, 2018 E.C. (July 23, 2026), while visiting the emergency department for a medical evaluation, Abiywork unexpectedly entered the presence of her Lord. Though her passing came suddenly and left her family with profound sorrow, they rejoice in the hope of the Gospel, knowing that she is now free from pain and resting in the everlasting peace of Christ.

May Almighty God grant His faithful servant eternal rest among the righteous, in the company of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and all the saints. May her memory remain an everlasting blessing to all who knew and loved her.

A viewing will be held on Thursday, July 30, 2026, from 2:00 PM – 3:00 PM, at HM Patterson Canton Hill. A Family Gathering will be held on Saturday, August 1, 2026, at Lay To Rest Funeral Home, Springfield, Virginia. A Memorial Service will be held on, Sunday, August 2, 2026, at Hamere Berhan Kedus Yohannes Metmeke Church. She will be laid to rest at Parklawn Memorial Park, Rockville, Maryland and a reception will follow. Times for all services are pending and will be updated automatically.
