Our beloved Alice Lee Hough of Smyrna, GA transitioned to her heavenly home on June 29, 2025. She was born on April 3, 1939 in Anson County, NC to Clarence and Lula Burr. She was preceded in death by her precious grandson, DelRay Hough and her loving husband, Bobby Hough.
Alice is survived by her sons, Danny (Tracy) of Marietta, Ronny (Leigh) of Kennesaw, grandchildren; Tori Philliber (Zack) of Cartersville, Erica Garrett of Marietta, and Lexie Montalvo (Andrew) of Woodstock, great grandchildren; Beckett Philliber, Grayson Garrett, Adam Montalvo and several foster great-grandchildren over the years. She was sister to Lola Davis, Barbara Kendall and her late siblings, Sara Nelson, Christine Bonneville, Albert Burr and Clarence Burr Jr., and had several nieces and nephews.
Growing up, Alice helped on the family farm growing cotton and tobacco. She was responsible for hanging tobacco from the rafters to dry. She married the love of her life, Bobby Hough, in December of 1957. They moved to Atlanta where she had many brief jobs in retail before becoming a homemaker. She used her homemaking skills to not only feed her family, but to feed thousands over the years during the Wednesday night suppers at Norton Park Church. Additionally, she was a frequent volunteer with Meals on Wheels.
Alice and Bobby maintained active lifestyles while their health would allow it. They enjoyed countless weeks camping in the north Georgia mountains, and spent much of their time in their camper with family. They hosted “Camp Hough” on the weekends where their young granddaughters could spend the night and shop at the Dollar Tree, color and craft, explore the backyard and roll down their hill, make play-dough from scratch, and play games. She played Rook and other card games weekly with her friends and followed it up with walks and lunch. She was always ready for Yahtzee, and many games were played at her kitchen table. She loved to have a good time, and her laughter was contagious.
Her gardening with Bobby was enjoyed by many; multitudes of people throughout Cobb County will never be satisfied with a tomato from anywhere else after having their tomatoes for decades. She canned her own salsa using all ingredients from her garden, and it rivaled that of any restaurant. Friends and family looked forward to getting their very own jar of the delicious “Salsa by Alice.” In addition to gardening, she had quite a talent in the kitchen and used that to serve those she loved. She made it an annual tradition to make pecan pies for her sons at Thanksgiving, baked coconut cake for her pastor on his birthday each year, prepared full holiday spreads single-handedly (despite help being offered), and would send home desserts in fun tins for everyone to snack on later. If you ever visited her house, you would have heard her say “If you leave hungry, don’t blame me.” Her pantry and her heart were always overflowing for everyone.
Most importantly, Alice shared the love of Jesus Christ with all that knew her, and many who didn't. For years, she volunteered in the baby and children’s ministry at Norton Park Baptist Church and was always available to serve whenever the church needed someone. Later in life while attending Milford Baptist Church, her influence continued and she was once voted “Mom of the Year” on Mother’s Day.
Alice was a wonderful example of a Proverbs 31 woman. She provided food for her family, set about her work vigorously, opened her arms to the poor and extended her hands to the needy. She was clothed with strength and dignity. She spoke with wisdom, with faithful instruction on her tongue. She led the family in prayer countless times and did not take a single day for granted. Every day was a blessing, especially days spent with family. Alice was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, friend, neighbor, and source of encouragement to anyone who needed it.
The family would like to give a special thanks to Nancy Jane Freeman for taking care and loving Alice so well since January of this year. Before her passing, she told Nancy, “Jesus sent you to me.”
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 8th from 9-11am at Georgia Memorial Park Funeral Home & Cemetery, 2000 Cobb Parkway South, Marietta, Georgia, 30060, with a service immediately following at 11am. Alice will be laid to rest on the grounds of Georgia Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made in her memory to Milford Baptist Church, 1030 Milford Church Road, Marietta, GA 30060.
