Amy Burnetta Garris, was born in Wesson, Arkansas and was the third of seven children born to Alden and Ethel Garris. “Nita” as she was affectionately known by her family, is described by siblings as a sweet, gentle natured spirit who enjoyed taking care of others, especially her younger sisters and helping her mother on the family farm. Nita was well-loved by everyone in their small community. Faith was central to her upbringing and Nita was involved with the youth training union at her home church, Wesson Baptist. After graduating from Junction City High School, she enrolled at Arkansas Baptist Hospital School of Nursing (class of 1957) where she was in the choir. Upon graduation, she was employed as a registered nurse by International Paper Company in Pine Bluff, Arkansas where she met her future husband, Bert Thorne. They married in 1959, moved to Baton Rouge, LA in 1962 where he completed his bachelor degree in accounting. The Thorne’s moved to Marietta, Georgia in 1965 and had their first child in 1967.
Amy and Bert were active members of Piedmont Baptist, now Piedmont Church for over fifty years. Amy sang in the church choir and volunteered in various capacities over the years while her children were young. Mrs. Thorne later returned to nursing at Kennestone Hospital.
Mrs. Thorne was a consummate caregiver, always inquiring about others’ health and caring deeply for their well-being. She was a good listener with a sharp memory. She provided advice, encouragement and good counsel to her children, friends and others throughout her life. Amy was happiest spending time with family and friends. No one ever left Amy’s house without a hug, encouragement, a good meal and usually some candy. Her door was always open and everyone was welcome. Amy’s grand-daughters were her greatest joy and her time with them was most precious. They carry on her athleticism and singing talents. She was proud of all their accomplishments and enjoyed attending school, sporting events and recitals over the years.
Mrs. Thorne was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Bert Thorne, and infant daughter Debra Lyn; as well as her parents, sister Maxine Collins Jones, brothers- in-law Jack Collins and Frank Jones, nephew Greg Collins, brother Charles Howard Garris and his wife Linda Garris.
Mrs. Thorne is survived by her children, Christy (Paul) Jaffe, Michael (Lisa) Thorne and granddaughters Maryn and Liv Thorne; as well as her siblings Elton (Annette) Garris, Relda Huitt, Mary Lou Fischer and Teal (Dean) Combs along with numerous nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews, extended family and friends who will forever hold her memory dear.
Mrs. Thorne was residing at Grace Living Personal Care home for the past seven years. Her family is grateful to Esther and David Woghiren, their children and the staff at Grace for their care and support of Amy.
