She was the daughter of Robert and Rosa Russell of Elizabeth City, NC and widow of William Wilbur Owens. She was a homemaker and worked for Perquimans County Social Services. She enjoyed gardening, embroidery and family.
She is survived by “The Sisters”: Audrey Layden, JoAnn Boswell, Rose Sue Breisch, Mary Wiley, Virginia Perry, EvaDell Riggs and Eula Fay Spruill. She has 3 surviving children: Rosa Sorrells, Brian Owens and Kimberly Owens; 6 grandchildren: Greg Free, Terrie Free, Brian Owens Jr, Seth Owens, Brooke Owens and Marialena Owens and one great grandchild: Aubrey Cray. She is also survived by 5 children by marriage: Allen Owens, Christine Edwards, Alice Sawyer, Carolyn Jernigan and Judy Wilder; and 21 grandchildren. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, December 21, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. in Hertford, NC. H.M. Patterson and Son, Canton Hill Chapel is honored to be serving the family of Barbara "Teenie Girl" Owens.
