Craig Bauman Satterlee, 72, of Marietta, passed away after a brief battle with cancer on November 16, 2015. He was born in Millville, New Jersey, to George and Jessie Satterlee on July 2, 1943, and moved to Atlanta in the late 70’s.
Craig received his undergraduate degree from Juniata College in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, and earned his Masters in Biology from the University of Richmond. He later added a Masters in Hospital Administration from the Medical College of Virginia.
From 1970-73, he served as a Captain in the U.S. Air Force. He then had a successful career in hospital administration for twenty years, serving in hospitals and finally as a Senior Regional Vice President with Hospital Corporation of America.
In retirement, he provided leadership to several non-profit organizations including FCS Urban Ministries, Cobb County Habitat for Humanity, MUST Ministries, and others. Drawing from an early love of woodworking, he realized his goal of becoming an accomplished fine furniture craftsman and teacher. He taught many students in his personal shop and at several woodworking schools, and found great joy in fostering a shared love for the craft. Most of his work was designed and built for family and friends. Using his strengths in leadership and administration, Craig served on the board of directors of the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship in Rockport, Maine, serving in many capacities, including Board Chairman.
Craig was an avid sports fan and participant. He especially liked racquetball and bowling (even scoring a 300 game) and was a runner for many years. His talents also extended into music. He played piano and guitar, and sang bass in the Mt. Bethel UMC choir and with the Kingsmen, an a cappella mens’ group. His favorite vacation spot throughout his life was the Jersey Shore, where he spent many summers beginning in his early childhood. He loved sharing time there with his family, and passed along to them a love for music and the beach. The pursuits and interests of his grandchildren mattered greatly to him, and he made special connections with each one of them. One of his most memorable qualities was his sense of humor. He will always be remembered for his great stories and his knack for always finding the appropriate time to tell a good joke.
Craig is survived by his wife, Lesley Satterlee; his daughter and son-in-law, Laura Satterlee Ward and James Shannon Ward; his grandchildren, Anna Grace, Noah, and Jonah Ward; his stepson, Cary Thomason; his sister-in-law, Donna Satterlee, and many cherished friends. He was preceded in death by his brother, Marvin Satterlee; his niece, Michelle Satterlee, and both of his parents. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial donations be made to Juniata College, 1700 Moore St, Huntingdon, PA, 16652; or to the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship, 25 Mill St, Rockport, ME, 04856. A memorial service celebrating his life will be held December 1, 2015 at 11:00AM, at Mt. Bethel United Methodist Church, 4385 Lower Roswell Road, Marietta, GA.
