David Lee Kroll passed away at the age of 48 on November 27, 2022, following an 8-year battle with colon cancer that he often described as “eight bonus years” of life. David was devoted to his family and friends, and enjoyed his career as a past Director of Music, church organist and Lego Robotics coach. In addition, David was a passionate special education advocate. He worked to provide enhanced educational opportunities for children with autism and other special needs --- with a focus on inclusion.
David is survived by his wife, Renee, and his son Joshua of Marietta, GA. He is also survived by his father and mother (Micheal and Jong Kim “Sue” (Ang) Kroll of Lansing, Michigan, and brother and sister-in-law Chris and Quinn Kroll of Lansing, Michigan. Also surviving are his father-in-law and mother-in-law Ralph and Norma Grotelueschen of East Moline, IL, sister-in-law and brother-in-law Amy and Matthew Huebschmann of Greenwood Village, CO, brother-in-law Mark Grotelueschen of East Moline, IL, and six nieces and nephews.
David was born on June 5, 1974, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He graduated from Winamac High School in 1992 in Winamac, IN, after which he attended Concordia University-River Forest with a double major as Director of Parish Music and Music Education, graduating in 1996 with a Bachelor’s Degree. He later returned to school to receive a Master’s Degree in Music Education from the University of Iowa.
Despite the many challenges of his 8-year battle with cancer, David remained active in his church and school communities. He was an avid reader and volunteer. David served as the Lego Robotics coach for both Teasley and Green Acres Elementary schools — he was thrilled that his Teasley team was able to advance to the state level of competition. Renee says he will be putting his music director skills to work on organizing all of the music activities in heaven and giving tours. David’s strong tenor voice, smile, and quick wit will be greatly missed.
Family and friends are invited to a memorial service on Saturday, December 3rd at 1 pm at Rivercliff Lutheran Church in Sandy Springs. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Rivercliff Lutheran Church and the Autism Speaks organization.
