Our brother/uncle, David Andrews Titus, passed away yesterday, Friday, February 10th, after six months living with cancer. David died peacefully as he slept, just one month shy of his 73rd birthday.
You all were important figures in David’s life, and may have known him as a childhood friend, as a student at North Haven High School, or when he attended Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut. Perhaps you were acquainted with Dave, because he was a Volunteer Fire Fighter in North Haven. Possibly you met him during his volunteer assignments at the West Haven Veterans Affairs Medical Center for 20 years, where he won several service awards.
After moving to Georgia, Dave continued volunteer activities, at WellStar Hospital in Austell and at the Chattahoochee Nature Center. Always, Dave eagerly anticipated the days when he would be working; and, he enjoyed knowing that he had performed his jobs well, and that he was needed.
David was a member of Saint Peter and Saint Paul Episcopal Church in East Cobb, and of Holy Family Catholic Church, where he was a 3rd Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, and received the Knight of the Month award for July, 2006. Dave loved the people he encountered at these churches, who so often accepted his invitations for lasagna dinners, or who celebrated with him at his birthday parties.
Anyone who knew Dave well, was probably the recipient of one of his delicious cakes or a pan of his tempting brownies. He often baked them for Phil’s students, or presented them to his physical therapists. Some of you may have been fortunate enough, to be the beneficiary of a hand-crafted card,
or the ubiquitous travel mug. David was often happiest when he could surprise others with a gift.
Dave was certainly an expert when it came to the topics of amphibians, or fire trucks and emergency vehicles! He always relished his trips to the Pierce, Sutphen and E-ONE manufacturing plants, or to a fire station. And, the Atlanta Botanical Garden’s poison dart frog exhibit was truly captivating for Dave!
Whether you were a friend of Dave’s for many years, or made contact with him recently, so many of you offered your time, your concern and your love to Dave during his life. Whether you invited him to dinner, remembered his birthday with a card or gift, wrote him a letter, or somehow worked frogs or firetrucks into the conversation, David was very blessed to have your attention. And, all of the Titus family are grateful for your having made a place for David in your hearts and in your lives!
(Future service plans are still pending.)
