Doris was born in 1933 in Flowery Branch, GA and later moved as a young teenager to Atlanta with her family. She graduated from Chamblee High School with honors before finding work at the Sears & Roebuck Store in the mail order department. It was there she met the love of her life and future husband, Dwight E. Toney.
The two were married in 1951 and settled in to life in Atlanta before Dwight was called to active duty from the Air Force Reserve during the Korean War. Military service moved the newlyweds to Hunter Air Force Base in Savannah, GA where the first of their four children was born. After being released from Active Duty the couple moved back to Atlanta for a brief period before establishing their home in Marietta where Dwight worked as a machinist at Lockheed Aircraft Corporation.
Doris settled in to the life of a homemaker consumed with raising their three boys and one girl. The children were extremely active in youth sports resulting in many long days spent on bleachers, working concession stands and supporting her children in everything they did. She was a woman of Faith teaching Sunday School at Eastside Baptist Church where she and Dwight were devout members. Doris also became an avid bowler, joining a league and lowering her handicap considerably.
While the children were attending school, she occupied her time at home working as a seamstress for Dwight Toney’s Sports Center sewing names and numbers on jerseys. She later sought a new challenge and opened Toney’s Trophies in Sandy Springs, GA specializing in youth sports and corporate awards. Doris retired from the successful business in 1995 after over 20 years of outstanding service to the community.
She was predeceased by her husband of 67 years, Dwight, her son Mark, her brother, Wallace, and her sisters Lois and Joyce. She is survived by son Mike and wife Debbie of Nashville, TN, son Tim and wife Kenny of Kennesaw, GA, daughter Sherri and husband Tim of Lawrenceville, GA, her sister-in-law, Diane Toney, of Lavonia, GA, 6 grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren.
Doris is remembered as a lifelong sports fan who was incredibly devoted to her family. Softspoken, intelligent, and purposeful. When she spoke, you listened. Her devotion to Dwight was evident as she cared for him and never left his side during the many years of Alzheimer’s.
We, Doris’ family, will honor her life and to celebrate the love she has given us, at 12:00 o’clock, Saturday, December 27th, 2025, in the Chapel of Georgia Memorial Park Funeral Home & Cemetery, 2000 Cobb Parkway South, Marietta, Georgia, 30060. Following her funeral service, she will be Committed, next to her beloved Husband, Friend, and Father of, Dwight. The family will receive friends, 1 hour before the service.
