Dorotea (Dorry) Fernandes D’Souza, a beloved mother, grandmother (Avó), teacher, and faithful disciple of God, passed away peacefully on June 23rd, 2026. Beloved daughter of Francisco Fernandes and Catarina Dsa, a loving sister to 6 siblings, 5 brothers and 1 sister. Survived with one brother, Henry Fernandes. Born on October 25th, 1956, in Goa (a former Portuguese colony in India) her life was marked by unwavering faith, commitment and service. Thus, leaving an undeniable mark on many who had the privilege of knowing her.
Dorry resided in Hampton, Georgia. She was a true warrior. Just fifteen days after her marriage, she lost her husband, John Rufino Dsouza. Despite this heartbreaking loss, she raised her only daughter as a single mother, surrounding her with unwavering love, strength, and devotion.
Dorry was truly a unique soul, loving and caring, yet also stern. She knew exactly what she wanted, wanting things to be done in her own way. Dorry was a teacher and later worked as a secretary at Church. She served faithfully at St. Sebastian Church, Loliem, Goa and continued her ministry in several churches across Goa, especially at the Basilica of Bom Jesus and Fr. Angelo Pilar Monastery Church. She also prepared meals for priests and those in need. Her compassion and nurturing spirit touched the lives of countless families. Upon moving to America, she continued her commitment to serving others by participating in numerous ministries at St. Philip Benizi.
One of her joys was being an Avó to her granddaughters, Sydella and Shania. Sher reveled in their laughter and nurtured their dreams, treasuring every moment spent with them. Through her guidance, she taught them the values of faith and compassion.
Dorry also had a creative spirit. She was a gifted artist and enjoyed playing several instruments. Good times often included spending time with her large family (child, grandchildren, in-laws, nieces, nephews, and other extended family), creating memories that will be treasured for generations. Her talents, combined with her heart and faith, reflected the beauty of the life she lived.
Dorry will be deeply missed by her devoted daughter, Sweetie, her son-in-law Jose, her granddaughters Sydella and Shania, and all whose lives she touched. Though she is no longer with us, her spirit will continue to inspire everyone who knew her.
"We thank Thee each morning for a newborn day
Where we may work the fields of new mown hay
We thank Thee for the sunshine
And the air that we breathe
Oh Lord we thank Thee
We thank Thee for the rivers that run all day
We thank Thee for the little birds that sing away
We thank Thee for the trees
And the deep blue sea
Oh Lord we thank Thee
Oh yes we thank Thee Lord
For every flower that blooms
Birds that sing, fish that swim
And the light of the moon
We thank Thee every day
As we kneel and pray
That we were born with eyes
To see these things
We thank Thee for the fields
Where the clovers grow
We thank Thee for the pastures
Where the cattle may roam
We thank Thee for Thy love so pure and free
Oh Lord we thank Thee
Oh yes we thank Thee Lord
For every flower that blooms
Birds that sing, fish that swim
And the light of the moon
We thank Thee every day
As we kneel and pray
That we were born with eyes
To see these things
We thank Thee for the fields
Where the clovers grow
We thank Thee for the pastures
Where the cattle may roam
We thank Thee for Thy love so pure and so free
Oh Lord we thank Thee"
“We Thank Thee”
