Mr. Dwight Edward Toney

Dwight Edward Toney of Marietta, GA passed peacefully from this earth on May 3rd with his beloved wife of over 67 years by his side. Dwight was born in 1931 in Carnesville, GA where he spent his youth working on the family farm and playing sports. He moved to Atlanta as a young man and met the love of his life at the Sears & Roebuck Store where they were both employed. He was called to active duty from the Air Force Reserve during the Korean War and spent the first year or so of their marriage at Hunter Air Force Base in Savannah, GA. The couple moved back to Atlanta for a brief period before settling in Marietta where Dwight worked as a machinist at Lockheed Aircraft Corporation. After being laid off, he began a short career at Metropolitan Life working as an insurance salesman. Dwight’s deep involvement with the Boys’ Club led him to pursue his true passion by opening Sandy Springs Sporting Goods which eventually became Dwight Toney’s Sports Center. After many successful years he was forced to close due to an automobile accident and joined Doris at Toney’s Trophies which he retired from in 1996. Dwight was heavily involved in youth sports for virtually his entire life. He coached, refereed, umpired, volunteered, and was President of East Marietta Little League for over 10 years. His involvement ranged from coaching T-Ball to refereeing High School basketball games and of course, coaching his children and grandchildren at every opportunity. He was predeceased by his son Mark, his brothers, Harold, Julian, Dwain, and his sister Jeanette. He is survived by wife Doris, son Mike and wife Debbie of Nashville, TN, son Tim and wife Kenny of Kennesaw, GA, daughter Sherri and husband Tim of Lawrenceville, GA, his brother and sister-in-law, Byron and Diane Toney, of Lavonia, GA, 6 grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren. Dwight is remembered for his outgoing personality, generosity with his time and advice, and unflappable demeanor. A kinder soul will never be found. Visitation and Funeral Services are being conducted at Georgia Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery, 2000 Cobb Parkway SE, Marietta, GA, 30060. The family will receive guests on Wednesday May 8th , 2019 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday May 9th , 2019, at 2:00 PM with burial to follow. In lieu of flowers, people wishing to do so may make a donation to the Alzheimer’s Association at https://www.alz.org/get-involved-now/donate .
