Elaine Buice McMenamin, age 84, of Atlanta, GA, passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2025. She was born in 1941 to Grace Cooper Buice and William Buice. A lifelong resident of Atlanta, she attended Sylvan High School and was awarded a scholarship to St. Joseph’s Infirmary School of Nursing. As a registered nurse, she specialized in mother-infant care and was head nurse on the maternity floor of South Fulton Hospital. She later worked in the preemie nursery at Northside Hospital. After twenty years of professional nursing—she always remained the family nurse--she embarked on a new path, first working in medical sales and then as an interior designer. The latter allowed her to indulge her love of antiques and fine fabrics. She had a soft spot for animals in need of rescue, at one time caring for as many as nine cats and two dogs. More than once, she spotted an abandoned pet on the side of the road and brought it into her care. She was an avowed feminist, supporting Planned Parenthood and the Atlanta Women’s Foundation.
She is preceded in death by her beloved Francis “Frank” P. McMenamin, whom she married in 1986. She is survived by her sister, Linda Carlyle, her daughter Melanie Holcomb (Douglas Shapiro), and three granddaughters, Amelia Holcomb (Evan Palmer), Sophie Shapiro, and Ida Holcomb.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly ask that you consider a donation in her name to Atlanta Women's Foundation.
