Evelyn Marie Maxwell, age 94, of Smyrna, Georgia, passed away on September 28, 2026. Born in March 1932 to Dottie Dee McIntosh Maxwell and Robert Carey Maxwell, Evelyn lived a life rooted in faith, generosity, resilience, and love for her family.
Evelyn attended Rome High School and an area trade school. She served as secretary of the Department of Risk Management for Cobb County, Georgia, a position in which she took great pride.
Evelyn loved the Lord, her children, her grandchildren, and her great-grandchildren. She was always there for her family—a generous woman who gave freely to those she loved while remaining remarkably frugal herself. She could “pinch a penny into thirds,” yet she enjoyed her clothes and always dressed well.
Her garden brought her tremendous joy and comfort. With an extraordinary green thumb, she had a gift for nurturing growing things. She loved watching hummingbirds and listening to the gentle music of her wind chimes. The many cats she loved throughout her life were her babies, and she believed their companionship had healing properties.
A cancer survivor and a survivor of life’s many challenges, Evelyn will be remembered for her strength, her devotion to her family, and the love she gave as Mother and Grandmama.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, Dottie Dee McIntosh Maxwell and Robert Carey Maxwell; her siblings, C. Verner Maxwell, Warren T. Maxwell, Gwendolyn M. Estfan, Robert D. Maxwell, and Ted D. Maxwell; her husbands, Clayton Clemones, Craig T. Canedy, and Joel Etheridge; and her daughter-in-law, Mary Clemones.
She is survived by her sister, Patricia M. Burns; her daughter, Cynthia Canedy Lawing and her husband, Daniel B. Lawing; her sons, Anthony C. Clemones and William Carey Clemones; and her daughter by marriage, Melody Camille Brobst and her husband, David.
Her surviving grandchildren include Hollie Lawing Pritchard and her husband, Bill Pritchard; Daniel Hunter Lawing and his wife, Morgan Lawing; and Alexandria and Parker Brobst. Her great-grandchildren are Imogen Pritchard, Tyson Lawing, and Harper Evelyn Lawing. She is also survived by her niece, Melanie Raines and her husband, Ronnie Raines, and her nephew, Maxwell Burns.
A family graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 1, 2026, at Kingston Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 4, 2026, at H.M. Patterson & Son–Canton Hill Chapel in Marietta.
