Gene Edwin Carroll, age 86, of Marietta, GA, loving husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully at his home on July 29th, 2018. He was born October 20, 1931, to Leith and Maude (Reid Fox) Carroll in Douglasville, GA. At the age of 6, his family relocated to Hurtsboro, AL, which became a place near and dear to his heart, where he spent the remainder of his childhood and young adult life.
He graduated from Auburn University, College of Agriculture, with a degree in Animal Husbandry and earned a second degree from Arizona State University, College of Engineering, with a degree in Industrial Engineering.
His long career began with serving in the USAF as a pilot, flying many missions and tours overseas. After his full 23-year career in the Air Force, he worked at MARTA for 5 years, Atlanta’s new mass transportation system just being envisioned at the time. He remained at MARTA until the project became a reality with many of the rail lines in operation and then joined the Civil Service working in the Department of Transportation, Urban Mass Transportation Administration division. He worked at DOT until his final retirement in 1997.
In his spare time he enjoyed his family, camping, canoeing and rafting, skiing, worldly travels with his wife, and any other adventure that came his way.
Gene will be sadly missed and remembered by his loving wife of 61 years, Yvonne (Dyas) Carroll; his son David (Beth) Carroll, his daughter Alicia (William) Dehner; grandchildren Joshua Carroll, Trent Carroll, Joseph White, Cole White, and Katherine Dehner; 1 great-granddaughter; and sister Anita Reynolds.
The family will receive guests between the hours of 5:00pm and 7:00pm on Wednesday, August 1, 2018, at H.M. Patterson & Son – Canton Hill, in Marietta. A funeral service will be held at 11:00am on Thursday, August 2, 2018, at Mt. Bethel Methodist Church. A private burial will be held at the family’s convenience.
