The Rev. George William Wyer, 93, died early Monday morning, May 13th in his residence at Sterling Estates of East Cobb in Marietta, GA. Born in Bucyrus, Ohio on January 6th, 1931, he was the son of John Philip and Hazel Valentine Wyer.
In 1954, he married Nancy Bohart Vogt of Stanberry, MO. They were married for 69 years until the death of Nancy on December 22nd, 2023. He is survived by his three daughters, Lisa Valentine Wyer of Croton-on-Hudson, NY, Penelope Wyer Barrow of Raleigh, NC, and Jennifer Wyer Bull of Marietta, GA and three grandchildren. His son, Ensign Christopher DeMoss Wyer, USN died previously in an accident in 1979.
The Reverend Mr. Wyer received his schooling at Bucyrus public schools, Oberlin College, and the University of Pittsburgh. He graduated from the Naval Intelligence School of Linguistics in Washington DC and served in the Navy during the Korean War as an Intelligence Officer. He also served as a Russian linguist at the Navy Security Group in Bremerhaven, Germany. Following his discharge as a senior grade Lieutenant, Mr. Wyer became an insurance agent in Cleveland and Salem, OH.
In 1964, he experienced a call to the ordained ministry and studied at Bexley Hall, the Episcopal Divinity School of Kenyon College. Graduating with honors and a Master of Divinity, he was ordained by the Episcopal bishop of Ohio in 1967. Father Wyer served for 2 years as Vicar of St Mary's Episcopal Church in the inner city of Cleveland, OH; he then served for 5 years as Associate Rector of Bethesda by-the-Sea in Palm Beach, FL. In 1974, he was called to be Rector of St. Paul's Church, Ivy in suburban Charlottesville, VA where he remained until his retirement in 1994.
Following his retirement, he assisted in churches in the Charlottesville area and after a move to Savannah, GA in 2002, he assisted in churches in eastern GA.
In 2013, he and his beloved wife, Nancy moved to a retirement community in Rolling Green Village, outside Greenville, SC where they spent their remaining years in a cottage with a garden and their beloved standard poodles, Clyde and Zeke.
A memorial service for Father Wyer will be conducted by the Rev. Justin McIntosh at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Ivy, VA in August.
He will be buried along with his wife and next to his son, at St. Paul's Church in Ivy.
