Mr. Glynn Mathis, age 87, passed away Sunday, October 21, 2018, at Magnolia Manor Nursing Center in Americas, GA. Graveside services were held at 4:15 pm Tuesday, October 23, 2018, at the Oak Grove Cemetery. Rev. John Walker officiated.
Glynn Mathis was born in Americus, GA, October 30, 1930, the youngest of four children of Ed and Lois Mathis. He was preceded in death by his sisters Irene M. Wellons, Lucille M. Monkus and a brother James E. Mathis. He graduated from Americus High School in 1948. He attended Georgia Southwestern College. Glynn was a Korean War Veteran. He served in the US Air Force. After completing his tour of duty in the Air Force, he graduated from Georgia Southwestern University, Vanderbilt University, and the University of Georgia. He was inducted into the GSW Athletics Hall of Fame and has served on the Board of Directors for GA Southwestern University’s Alumni Association. Glynn had a career in public education for 33 years as a teacher, coach, and principal in Cobb County at Mountain View, Milford, Russell, and Tritt Elementary. He was also a charter member of the Marietta Golden Kiwanis Club.
