

Mrs. Grace Greenwood Howland, 91, died Monday, May 20th, 2013. She was born in Orient Ohio, to the late Isaac and Perline Hill. She and her father both enjoyed reading which is fitting as she got her name, Grace Greenwood, after the author bearing that name. Grace was raised in a Christian home and enjoy teaching her family along with others about Jesus. She was a graduate of Sarasota High School. She became a big baseball fan. Her dad coached and both of her brothers played. Her love for baseball began at an early age and continued to develop throughout her life. Grace worked as a Switchboard Operator at an upscale hotel in Sarasota. During these years, she met several circus members and considered traveling for the summer with Ringling Brother’s Barnum and Bailey Circus. She also worked as a Switchboard Operator for Greyhound in Columbus, Ohio. Grace attended Capital University in Ohio and left a quarter-semester away from graduating, in-order to care for her parents. Grace became friends with Maxine Howland who wanted her to meet her brother Lawrence. Grace and Lawrence were married on June 10th, 1950, in Harrisburg, Ohio. Together with Lawrence, they became proud parents of Shirley Ann Howland and John Lawrence Howland. Grace accompanied Lawrence throughout his 20 years of service in the United States Navy. They were stationed in Great Lakes, IL.; Norfolk, VA.; and Miami, FL.; before moving to Marietta, GA, in 1960. Grace enjoyed family, having children playing at her house, traveling, reading, shopping, watching Braves baseball, spoiling grandchildren, singing in the choir, music, being in and observing nature, serving as a Sunday School Teacher, and being an active in church activities. Grace was also an Ohio State Buckeye fan, and she cheered for them and anyone playing against Michigan. Grace was very grateful for the dear friendships she was blessed with throughout her life. Grace had a fun and favorite hobby of collecting Angels and magnets; of which she had several hundred each.
She was preceded in death her most beloved husband of almost 32 years, Lawrence; her parents Isaac and Perline, her step-father Roscoe Milam, who lived to be 101 years old; brothers, Kenneth and Alvie Hill; and her son in law, Thomas Emory Jordan.
Her survivors include; daughter, Shirley Ann Jordan; son John Lawrence Howland, and daughter in law, Gretchen Gayle Howland. Grandchildren, Laurie Hix (spouse Mike), Sheree Morris (spouse Adam), Deanna Maddux (spouse Daniel), Alicia Howland( finace Kyle Marshall), and Andrew Howland. Great-grandchildren, namesake Gracie Hix and Tyler Morris.
Funeral Services celebrating Grace’s life will be held at 12:00, Friday, May 24th, 2013, in the Chapel of Georgia Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery, 2000 Cobb Parkway, Marietta, Georgia, 30060. Interment will follow on the Georgia Memorial Park grounds. The family will receive friends Thursday, May 23rd, 2013, at Woodstock Funeral Home, 8855 Main Street, Woodstock, Georgia, 30188.
