Greta was the only child of Clarence and Linnie Clemmons. She was born in Sherman, Texas on March 11, 1929, and grew up in Greenville Texas. She accepted Jesus as her Savior and the age of 10.
She and her parents moved to Tampa Florida during WWII, so her father could work in the shipyards. She was very active at Hillsboro High School as a majorette, drum major, club president, and many other activities.
She met Phil, her future husband, on a blind date. He was in the Army Air Corps and was stationed in Tampa. He flew a bomber which he named the Gorgeous Greta. He painted her picture on the side of the plane, as well as his flight jacket. They were married July 18, 1946, when Greta was a mere 17 years old. They moved to Atlanta, where they made their home for the rest of their lives.
Greta and Phil had 3 children, John, Cathy and Mary Ann. She was a stay at home mom, who had many, many interests. She loved antiquing, volunteering at school and church, decorating, travelling, painting, drawing, playing card games, collecting and was active in garden club and many service organizations.
Greta was dedicated to her faith, and as her children got older, she gave her time at the Baptist Tabernacle in Atlanta, teaching Sunday School, working in the sound booth and even running a TV camera, when the church service was on television.
She was a lifelong collector of dolls, coca cola memorabilia, glassware and just about everything collectable! She enjoyed sharing her collections with everyone and anyone who wanted a tour. She was a wonderful entertainer, and opened her home often for bridal showers, birthdays, holidays and any occasion.
When she and Phil moved to Marietta, they became active in Eastside Baptist Church. She was very involved in the media and sound, for church services, ballet recitals, Christmas programs, school chapel, and many programs in the Christian school. She ran the Logos office when cassettes and CDs of the sermons were sold.
When she ‘retired’ from the sound ministry, she spent her time playing cards with her beloved group – Widows Gone Wild! A sweet group of ladies, who got together every Monday and Friday to play cards. These women became very dear to her. She loved her dog Sweetie pie. Greta had a personality that was fun and unique.
We will cherish our memories, and are so grateful to have had so many wonderful years with her.
Along with her parents, Greta is preceded in death by her husband Phil, her son John Barrett, grandson, Jeff Shields and her son in law, Jerry Edwards and her sweet dog, Tiger.
She is survived by her daughters, Cathy (Carter) McCallum and Mary Ann (Gary) Engel; 12 grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren and many extended family members and friends she dearly loved.
The family will receive guests for visitation on Thursday, February 8, 2024 between 9:30 and 10:30 and at Eastside Baptist Church Marietta, Georgia. A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 am with burial immediately following the service at Arlington Memorial Park, Sandy Springs Georgia.
In Lieu of flowers, donations may be made, in Greta’s name, to Eastside Baptist Church Youth Missions. (go to followeastside.com)
