

On Friday August 9, 2013 Hugh Doyle Newton, Jr. passed away peacefully in his sleep with his family by his side. He will be remembered for his commitment to his family, sweet and caring nature, and his strength both physically, and as a man of character.
Hugh was born on March 31, 1923 in Atlanta, Georgia to Hugh Doyle Newton and Marie Woolbright Newton. He graduated from North Fulton County High School in Atlanta where he was an all-state end in football. His strength was not only evident in his athleticism on the field, but also in his active service fighting for our country. His military career began during World War 11 where he served in the first division of the United States Marine Corps. He saw extensive action at Peleliu and Okinawa and bravely fought in the Philippines and Guam. Following the war he attended Georgia Tech and began his career as an electrical engineer with Western Union in Atlanta, GEorgia. His career was interrupted by a call to active duty by the Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict.
After Hugh's honorable discharge from the Marines, he accepted a transfer to Jackson, Mississippi where he lived for the next fifty years with his family. He served as a football official with MPHSAA for twenty-five years and enjoyed coaching and attending his sons' sports activities. He loved spending time traveling around the world with his beloved wife and taking care of his dachshunds . He was an active member of Wesley United Methodist Church and later St. Matthews United Methodist Church in Ridgeland, Mississippi. After forty five years with Western Union, he retired and enjoyed spending time with his six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Ellen Patrick Newton, his two sons, Hugh Patrick Newton and wife Brenda, of Marietta, Georgia, and Dr. Robert Doyle Newton and wife Marilyn, of Oxford, MS. He also leaves six grandchildren; Karen Amanda Newton Moore, James Patrick Newton and his fiancé Melissa Wilson, Lauren Newton Roady (Chase), Leigh Newton Little ( Philip), Lainey Newton Kemp (Jonathan), and Libby Newton Nabors (Nick). Also, seven great-grandchildren, Thomas Whittington Roady, Robert Westwood Roady, Adeline Marie Little, Braden Newton Little, Charles Philip Little, Henley Marie Kemp, and Robert William Nabors.

Services will be held at 2 pm on Sunday, August 11th at H.M. Patterson and Sons in Marietta, Georgia and burial on Monday, August 12th at 3pm at Parkway Memorial Cemetery in Ridgeland, Mississippi.
