On August 21, 2026, Jane Powell Davis, age 96, joined her Lord and her beloved husband, the Reverend Archie Davis (1925-2015) and their three children, Walter Powell Davis (1952-1975), Phillip Randall Davis (1969-2009), and Jane Helen “Missy” Davis (1966-2007), in heaven.
Jane was born in Willoughby, Ohio, to Walter Daniel Powell and Helen Bell Powell. She was also preceded in death by her brother, David Powell, who gave his life serving in WWII. She is survived by her granddaughters, Caroline Jane Medlin and Helen Medlin Morris; Helen’s husband, Jacob Hugh Morris; and beloved nieces and nephews. In the days before her passing, Jane also experienced the special joy of meeting her great-granddaughter and namesake, Eloise Jane Morris, who was born the week before her passing.
Jane graduated from Columbia Bible College, now Columbia International University, where she met her husband, Archie. Together, they devoted their lives to Christian service and to the work of the church. She served faithfully as an elder, taught Sunday school, planned Vacation Bible School, and shared the love of Christ through a lifetime of generous and compassionate ministry.
Jane loved gardening and cooking, but her greatest joy was caring for others. She was a devoted mother and grandmother and became a mother, caretaker, and source of comfort to many more than her own children and grandchildren. In the midst of her own loss and in spite of her own grief, Jane remained the light of her grandchildren’s lives, dedicating her final years to caring for Helen and Caroline as their beloved “Nana”. Her wisdom, strength, hospitality, and loving spirit touched generations of family members, church members, neighbors, and friends.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 29, at North Avenue Presbyterian Church in Atlanta, Georgia. A private interment will take place at New Hope Presbyterian Church in Gastonia, North Carolina, in the coming weeks.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be made in Jane’s memory to Samaritan’s Purse.
