Janet was born to parents William Burton Bourne and Ruth Marjorie Keracher Bourne in Yonkers, NY on September 30, 1944. 4 years later, Ellen Ruth Bourne came along as her little sister. Janet graduated from Commerce High School, Yonkers, NY.
After graduation, Janet went to work in Manhattan for Vick Chemical Company as an administrative assistant to the President. From there she went on to work for Pepsi Co. as the assistant to the Chairman of the Board.
On March 17, 1968 Janet met the love of her life, Philip Alden Thompson, at a St. Patrick’s Day Party, and they were married on New Year’s Day – January 1, 1969. Janet was involved in the Eastern Star Triangle throughout high school and beyond. After their marriage, Janet and Phil continued their involvement as matron and patron for the Order of DeMolay.
Their daughter Jennifer was born in Ossining, NY, on July 4, 1973. Shortly after, IBM moved the family to Roswell, GA, where they lived from 1977-1979. On February 12, 1979, Philip Ross Thompson was born and although loved tremendously, passed away on February 19, 1979.
After a brief move to Carmel, Indiana, from 1980-1982, the family relocated back to Georgia, living in Marietta, where the family has since resided. Back in the day IBM stood for ‘I’ve Been Moved’!
Once settled in Marietta, Janet began her second career as an Interior Designer, which provided the opportunity to use a most unique skill, an eidetic memory for color, seeing one color and exactly matching to another from memory. After retiring from Design work in early 2000s; Janet went on to work, once again, as an administrative assistant for Ameriprise Financial Planners.
After Phil’s passing, Janet had the opportunity to travel abroad to many countries: England, Scotland, Ireland, Austria, France, and Switzerland. For most of her adult life Janet sang in her church choir and was an active member of the churches she attended as an elder or organizer. She had a special gift for entertaining and threw many exciting parties over the years. And throughout her life her love ice cream only grew in magnitude!
As a lover of cats, Janet had many furry friends: Fluffly, Columbus, Madonna, Tiger, and siblings – Belle and Beau, who currently live and love on Jennifer and Blake.
At the age of 67, Janet was diagnosed with Early-Onset Alzheimer’s. With the help and support of her family, she was able to remain in her home in Marietta. In June of 2019, Janet moved to Memory Care at Historic Roswell Place where she lived for 4.5 years. And in September of 2023, she moved to the beautiful Green Park Personal Care Home in Marietta (right down the street from where Jennifer and Blake live, allowing them to see her often). Janet was also attended to
by Capstone Hospice over the last few years. There are so many wonderful nurses, CNAs, and caregivers who helped support Janet, Jennifer, and Blake along this journey, without whose love and support Janet’s life would not have been as long and vibrant. In the end, Janet was cared for by the loving team at Tranquility Hospice at Kennesaw Mountain, which is where her final nine days were spent.
Janet is proceeded in Death by her loving husband Phil in 1997, her son Philip Ross (1979), parents William ‘Burt’ (1990) and Ruth (1999) Bourne; mother-in-law Phyllis Scheffler Thompson Goodwin (1995), brother-in-law George Golliver (2000), as well as long-time and purrfect kitty companion Tiger (2013).
