During my dozen or so years as a volunteer with the Korean community, Jay was a constant presence at the activities I was involved with. I first met him when I was a team teacher in English and citizenship-test preparation at the senior school he supported. Later I taught citizenship-test preparation at the Korean American Association of Greater Atlanta when Jay was its president.

The U.S. was in a severe financial crisis during my early work at KAAGA, and I saw firsthand how hard Jay worked unselfishly to try to soften the economic suffering among Korean Americans. At the same time, he was pushing to make KAAGA an ever more potent force for service for and on behalf of the Korean community. He was a forward-looking servant leader who fostered the integration   of his community into the fabric of American life. However, I think describing Jay's legacy as a life of service is incomplete without recognition of his role as a builder through his cheerful commitment to doing the hard work of turning ideas into realities that have had ripple effects that benefit all Georgians. Much of that work was done quietly out of the spotlight without concern for any recognition. His life was truly greater than the sum of its parts. He's gone too soon, and we are the poorer for it.
