

Joan graduated from Ohio State University with a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Education. Joan’s teaching career spanned over sixty years where it took her to many interesting places such as Germany, Japan, San Diego, and she also helped start a Montessori school in Marietta, GA. Later in her career, Joan volunteered as an English as a Second Language teacher for both children and adults.
In her spare time, Joan enjoyed spending time with her family, church ministry, traveling, volunteer work where she would always try to make a difference, rooting on the Atlanta Braves, college football and basketball, especially the Ohio State Buckeyes, and anything that involved her fourteen grandchildren!
Joan is preceded in death by spouse, Edgar Lucas, her brothers, Tom and Joe Hans, and sister, Mary Berry.
Joan is survived by her two daughters, Mary (Joey) Freeman and Elizabeth (Tony) Youngs, son, Matthew Lucas, and all of her grandchildren, Thomas, Christopher, Andrew, Will, Grace, Christian, Monica, Damian, Julia, Michaela, Mary Grace, Maggie, Theresa and Catie, and many nieces and nephews.
A Funeral Mass will be held at Holy Family Catholic Church, Marietta, GA on January 7, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. with a burial to follow at Arlington Memorial Park, Sandy Springs, Georgia. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Joan Lucas’ name to Our Lady of Perpetual Help Cancer Home, 760 Pollard Blvd, SW, Atlanta, GA 30315.
