Born on December 25, 1938, in Old Town, Maryland, JoAnne was the eleventh of twelve children of Daisy Belle Lewis Wagner and Claude Wesley Wagner.
At age four her family moved to Garrett County, where she met her husband to be, Eugene Brenneman, at the small country church known as McHenry United Brethren. She only knew him as the quiet little Brenneman boy back then. They attended the same schools growing up and eventually fell in love in high school.
JoAnne and Eugene graduated from Northern Garrett High School in 1957. After graduation she worked at C&P Telephone company in Washington, DC while her soon to be husband attended college at the University of Maryland.
JoAnne and Eugene were married on July 16, 1960. They honeymooned at Niagara Falls and built a life together through moves to Pennsylvania, where their two oldest children were born, Wisconsin, South Carolina, and ultimately Marietta, Georgia, where they made their home in 1969 and welcomed their two youngest daughters.
JoAnne loved teaching. She taught kindergarten and then second grade for six years at Marietta Christian School, where she had the privilege of teaching both of her younger daughters.
She instilled a passion for faith in all of her children and in the children she taught through the years. She served for many years in children’s ministry at her churches, taught Sunday School, and later taught Awanas alongside her husband, Eugene.
In addition to classroom work, JoAnne held various administrative roles and was actively involved with Gideons International beginning in 1997; she served in many positions to help lead her local camp and became President of the Auxiliary for her camp for many years.
Her faith, which she embraced at age 13, guided her life. Her love and loyalty to family was most important to her. She raised four children and worked hard to be a loving and dedicated mother. Cooking was necessary with a large family; however, it was a passion for her. She loved to cook your favorite meal or dessert when family came to visit or for birthdays and holidays.
Eugene and JoAnne were blessed to travel throughout their lives, and they created many beautiful family memories with vacations for the whole family. They visited Desitin, FL, Sanibel Island, FL, Branson, MO, Sevierville, TN, Sapphire Valley, NC, and one of the top highlights was their trip to Hawaii. At least once a year, the family traveled to Maryland to visit her many siblings and their families. The Wagner Family Annual Reunion holds many dear memories.
JoAnne was preceded in death by her parents and ten of her siblings. She is survived by her beloved husband of nearly 66 years, Eugene Webster Brenneman; her brother Donald Dewayne Wagner (Beverly); her children Cheryl Wilson (Dwayne), Paul Brenneman, Joyce Glass, and Susan Yuen (Jason). She was a proud grandmother of Brandon Wilson, Bryant Glass, Jacob Brenneman, Benjamin Brenneman, and Harper Yuen.
~ Proverbs 31:10 - 12 ~
An excellent wife who can find? She is far more precious than jewels.
The heart of her husband trusts in her, and he will have no lack of gain.
She does him good, and not harm, all the days of her life.
