John and I first met in 1966 when Youth Services was its infancy. We began as colleagues and quickly became friends. We have remained such and in touch throughout the years.

I cherish many fond memories of times that our families have shared. One that comes to mind is the fun that John, Charles Ray, Danny Starnes, and I had back in the 70's taking our boys up to my parent's farm in Cherokee county on weekends so the boys could take turns riding our "quarter horse"( a Shetland pony that each of us had pitched in $25 to buy.)

All of my family send our heart felt condolences to Johnnie Gay, Jeff, Michael and their families and feel that our family has been blessed to have known you. John will be lovingly missed by us all.

Sincere condolences to Johnnie, Jeffery, Michael and family. It was my privilege and pleasure to work with John for ten years when he was the director of the DHR Office of Fraud and Abuse. He was a role model and a positive influence in lives of many, many people. He was a man of great integrity, intelligence and wisdom. I will always remember his sly smile when he was amused. He was a kind and gentle soul. - Gary Simms
