November 21, 1948 - August 13, 2022
Kenneth (Ken) Lee Dumbleton, 73, of Marietta, passed away Saturday, August 13, 2022, peacefully at his residence with his girls by his side. Ken was born on November 21, 1948, in Atlanta, Georgia, to the late Harry Lynn and Margaret Hawkins Dumbleton.
He spent his youth in Brookhaven playing school sports: football, basketball, track & field, and wrestling, earning varsity letters multiple times each year as a star athlete at Cross Keys High School. Ken's parents were grateful for sports as they kept a very busy Ken out of trouble and helped him earn his path to college. Ken attended the University of Georgia on an athletic scholarship in football. His pride for his alma mater was infectious; to know him was to know all about Georgia Football!
In his early twenties, Ken enlisted in the US Army Reserve where he proudly served his country for multiple years. Upon graduation using his BSEd degree from UGA, he accepted a Physical Education teaching position at Pace Academy in Atlanta, where Ken met his wife, Patsy (Pat) Jane Worley. The two were engaged after three months of dating and married on August 3, 1974. Ken then took the Athletic Director position at Arlington Academy, where he coached multiple sports and enjoyed years of success before moving into the transportation business for the remainder of his professional career, retiring from Penske Truck Leasing with a successful portfolio. Ken won multiple distinguished President's Club awards and maintained his status as one of the top salesmen in the country. He took his love of people, sports, and his passion for honest business to heart and applied it every single day. His customers shared the highest form of compliment by becoming lifelong friends. He was an extremely hard worker and shared the importance of hard work and honesty with his children and grandchildren so they could carry on his legacy.
Ken's greatest passion was his family. He was completely devoted to his wife and two girls, making it a point to attend every meeting, sporting event, and school activity, all while being an avid volunteer in every area. Ken and Pat were members of Northside United Methodist Church, where they spent time volunteering and celebrating their faith. They were also active members of the Spina Bifida Association raising awareness and funds to support a cause dear to them and benefitting their youngest daughter. Ken joined the local Lions Club, eventually serving as President because that is just what he did! He was a true leader and enjoyed serving others. Later in life, once grandchildren entered the picture, Ken could be found supporting each of them at their school and sporting events.
Ken was a friend to all and a stranger to no one. He was loyal and kept his friends close. His smile was his trademark, his laugh infectious, and his devotion to family and friends one of his most admirable traits. He loved animals, especially the family dogs, and he never missed a chance to spend time at the beach.
Ken is preceded in death by his wife, Pat, who passed away six months prior on February 4, 2022, and his parents, Harry and Margaret of Atlanta, Georgia. He is survived by his two daughters, Peyton Dumbleton Robberts (Julius) and Rebecca Dumbleton; his four grandchildren, Anelize, McWhirter, Kendley, and Gerius Robberts; as well as his brother Harry (Butch) Lynn Dumbleton Junior (Nancy) and their children, Janie and Matt Dumbleton.
Peyton and Rebecca invite friends to join them as they celebrate their Dad. He and their mother adored throwing a party, gathering everyone together in laughter and love! The girls will honor his wishes, and Ken Dumbleton's Celebration of Life will truly be that… a celebration of him, the family he cherished, the friends he held dear, and the community he was delighted to serve.
Celebration of Life for Ken Dumbleton will be held: Friday, September 9, 2022, 6:00pm - 9:00pm, Olde Towne Athletic Club 4950 Olde Towne Parkway NE, Marietta, GA 30068. A note from the family: Please join us in wearing our "Bulldog Casual" red and black as Dad would not have it any other way!
