Leon was born on August 1, 1947, in Lackawanna, New York, to the late Norman E. and Marjorie V. Smith. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy as an electrician aboard the USS John W. Weeks during the Vietnam War. This experience reflected the dedication, discipline, and strong work ethic he carried throughout his life.
After being discharged from the Navy, Leon worked for the Lehigh Valley Railroad for several years before pursuing a career with the Federal Railroad Administration as a train inspector. He steadily advanced to the position of Deputy Regional Administrator for the Southeast Region. He retired from the Federal Railroad Administration after 29 years of dedicated service.
Leon was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather whose greatest joy came from spending time with his family. His love for them was evident in his unwavering support, his presence in times of need, and the wisdom he shared with them.
A master mechanic and talented handyman, Leon could design, build, or repair just about anything. He especially loved working on cars, particularly his 1955 Chevy. He found great joy in solving problems with his hands, knowledge, and sheer determination. Leon generously shared his time and abilities with those in need.
Leon is survived by his wife of nearly 58 years, Nancy Smith; his son, Lee (Tina); his daughter, Michelle Moore (Michael); and his cherished grandchildren, Max Smith, Madison Moore, and Jake Moore.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Patricia Penner, and his brother, David Smith.
A family military service will be held in August at Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Georgia. The family will hold a gathering and celebration of life for family and friends at a later date.
Leon’s strength, loyalty, work ethic, and love for his family leave a lasting legacy. He will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever carried in the hearts of the family and friends who knew and loved him.
