Born July 20, 1924 in Lake Wales, FL to parents Lindsay Sims Acuff, Sr. formerly of Rising Fawn, GA and Velma Baker Acuff formerly of Berry, AL. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Julia(Judy) Cooledge Acuff; children Lin Acuff(Cindy) Roswell, GA; Laura Price(David) Seneca, SC; Susan McCraw(Bill) Durham, NC; and Juliane Acuff(Greenville, SC); Grandchildren: Sims Acuff, Atlanta; Abby Acuff Downey(Bill) Lexington, SC; Matthew Acuff (Lauren) Dunwoody; Laura Acuff, Nashville,TN; Olivia Acuff, Atlanta; Will Acuff, Atlanta; Micheal Price, Seneca; Jennifer Price, Seneca; Caroline McCraw, Chicago; Emily McCraw, Charlotte, NC. Two greatgrandchildren: Taylar Downey and Summer Acuff; his sister Margarite Borders and a host of nieces and nephews.
He was the youngest of five children: Catherine, Mary Evelyn, Margarite, and Betty. Growing up in Lake Wales, Florida, he graduated from Lake Wales High School. He was active in scouting and earned the rank of Eagle Scout.
While serving in the Navy in WWII, he was sent to Georgia Tech and thus began his life-long love of the Yellow Jackets. He completed his degree in Electrical Engineering in 1947. During his long career, he was a field service engineer for Allis Chalmers, Plant and Consulting Engineer for Cleveland Electric. A member of the American Institute of Plant Engineers, he served as president for a term.
Community service was an important part of Lindsay’s life. He was an active member of Kiwanis Club Atlanta for nearly 40 years. There he served on The Boys and Girls Committee and on the Welcome Committee as a greeter; with his amazing memory he would welcome each member by name. He was also involved with the Buckhead Christian Ministries having served as a board member and participated in various activities.
Lindsay was a devoted member of Second Ponce de Leon Baptist for over 70 years where he was a member of the EEE Sunday School class. He served as a deacon, a Sunday School director, a sound system operator, and a member of various committees.
It was at Second Ponce that he met the love of his life, Judy, while he was attending Ga Tech. Lindsay and Judy were later married in the church in 1952. Together they had four children to whom he demonstrated a deep love of God and family, integrity, good manners, generosity, a willingness to help others, a quick wit and the ability to fix most anything. As his grandchildren entered his life, they too experienced the fine example he set. Wonderful times were had at Fort Gates, the Cooledge family house on the St. Johns River in the Florida woods where he made everyone feel at home. Water skiing, riding on Gracie (the A-model), fishing, and snipe hunts with Lindsay are memories held by many. After retiring, together he and Judy built a log cabin and many of its furnishings near Ellijay, GA. Camp Ellijay with the grandchildren was a special time each summer.
Lindsay was always known to be an industrious, hardworking and creative man. Friends, neighbors, and family could count on him when something needed to be fixed or help was needed. He was a craftsman as well as a jack-of-all-trades. He enjoyed and valued the process of building and engineering as much as the end project.
Lindsay was a life-long Ga Tech fan and supporter. He regularly attended football games and he kissed Judy (or whoever might be sitting with him during the games) whenever the Yellow Jackets scored. He was proud that Lin, Juliane, Sims, Matt, and Olivia attended his Alma Mater.
A quiet, soft spoken man he had a charming personality and easy going manner with a quick wit and dry sense of humor. What Lindsay wanted remembered above and beyond his many accomplishments and impressive legacy was that he was always, invariably a gentleman. Indeed he was.
A memorial service will be held at 2nd Ponce de Leon Baptist Church on
Sunday, August 14th at 2:00 PM. A reception celebrating his life will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Second Ponce de Leon Baptist Church, Buckhead Christian Ministries, or a charity of your choice.
