Lois was born on April 12, 1938, in Bridgeport, Connecticut, to Dorothy and Alvin Hogberg.
She graduated from Stratford High School in 1956. In 1962, she married her high school sweetheart, Harvey Cybul, and together they raised three children. As the wife of a Naval Officer, she spent many years supporting Harvey's career, raising their family during his many deployments at sea, and making a home as the family moved from one duty station to the next.
Lois loved to travel, starting with train trips to New York City with her girlfriends to see Broadway shows. Later, she made many road trips to Annapolis, Maryland, to visit Harvey while he was at the Naval Academy. Over the years, she enjoyed several trips to Europe and traveled throughout the United States, including Hawaii and a cruise to Alaska. Lois enjoyed spending time at Flagler Beach, sharing it with friends and family, enjoying the ocean, and searching for dolphins.
Lois will be remembered for many things, including her generosity, love of family, sense of humor and wit.
Lois rarely missed a chance to watch her children and grandchildren do what they loved.
Whether it was at a swim meet, the ballpark, on the soccer field, at a choir concert, a cheer competition, or another school event, she was there with snacks, cold drinks if needed and enthusiastic applause. Her grandchildren remember her as encouraging, comforting, warm, gracious, and always proud of them.
Lois loved finding a good bargain, especially if it meant she could buy more toys to donate to Toys for Tots. She enjoyed sewing pillowcases for the children in the hospital and making gift baskets for the church fair.
The holidays were always a time for family. Thanksgiving meant a huge, formal table with delicious food and a place for everyone to sit. Christmas brought decorations throughout the house and more presents than anyone needed. Lois loved watching others open their gifts and often forgot to open her own. She always made sure everyone had a warm winter sweater, and the cookie jar was always full. Easter baskets were filled and hidden for the grandchildren year after year. Many meals of spaghetti and meatballs were enjoyed at the table with family, and she never forgot the dessert or the caramel ice cream.
Lois is survived by her husband of 64 years, Harvey Cybul; her sister, Irene Breault; her three children, Cynthia Cybul, David Cybul, and Ellen Shaffer (Randy); her grandchildren, Benjamin Cybul (Melora), Hannah Cybul, Riley Shaffer, Avery Cybul, Megan Moorefield (Luke), and Emily Cybul; her three great-grandchildren, Cooper and Everett Cybul, and Joanna Moorefield; along with other loving family members and many friends.
A celebration of Lois's life will be held on August 9, 2026, at 3:00pm at H.M. Patterson & Son Canton Hill Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations be given in Lois’s name to the First Congregational Church of Stratford, Connecticut or the Dolphin Scholarship Foundation.
