

Col. Melvin “Pete” Weyhrich, Ret., 99, passed away peacefully on September 21, 2023 surrounded by his three children. He was born to Otto and Josephine Weyhrich in Sioux Falls, South Dakota in 1924. He graduated from the University of Nebraska Omaha and from the Army War College with a Masters of Strategic Studies. He was an active duty officer for the United States Air Force for 32 years.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Lorraine of 73 years and his four younger sisters. Pete is survived by his daughter, Lucy Hicks and her children, Jason and Diana, his son, Bill Weyhrich, his wife, Karen and their children Abby and Peter and his daughter, Gina Bottone, her husband, Chip and their son, Alex. He is also survived by 13 great grandchildren and a large extended family.
Pete loved anything to do with aviation. During his long career in the United States Air Force, he served in many capacities all over the world and everyone enjoyed hearing stories of his missions. Pete, at heart, was always a family man and happy to get home on completion of his assignments. He was genuinely interested in all people and so greatly admired those who had the drive to learn and prosper.
The family will receive guests at the Parc at Piedmont at a time and date to be determined. Pete and his wife, Lorraine will be inurned at Georgia National Cemetery. Pete enjoyed his later years at the Parc where he made many dear friends and where the staff also loved him for his positive attitude and sense of humor. His family so appreciated the folks there who enriched all of our lives.
