

Born in Trieste, Italy to two active-duty Army officers, Patty Orr Hichak and Michael Hichak, WWII veterans. Graduating from Thomas Jefferson High School in Alexandria, Va., he matriculated to the Naval Academy in June 1967. A well-rounded student, Michael was frequently on the Superintendent’s list, and excelled in athletes. Michael also served as 26th Company Commander and as Advertising Manager for the Lucky Bag.
Commissioned as an Ensign, his first assignment was aboard the USS Tolovana, AO-64. He then began to fulfill his lifetime ambition and love, that of a naval aviator. For Michael, the sky was not only home, but a passion and way of life that fulfilled a lifetime dream. He earned his Navy Wings of Gold in 1973. He served seven years on active duty, before transitioning to the Naval Reserve, retiring as a Navy Captain after having served as squadron commander, with 30 years of service to his beloved county.
After earning an MS degree in Systems Management from the University of Southern California, he was hired and employed by Delta AirLines for 27years, having served as a Captain on the DC-9, MD-88, B-757, and B-767 and International Captain on the B-757,767. After leaving Delta. Michael was an International captain for Maxjet Airways and then for Atlas Air Cargo, a role he found particularly gratifying in supporting U.S. Military operations around the world.
On August 21, 1992, Michael married the love of his life, Noreen Maricle, a Delta Flight attendant who, like Michael, loved the air and traveling around the world.. Michael enjoyed the outdoors - hiking, salmon fishing in Alaska, and Heliskiing in British Columbia.
Michael was predeceased by his parents and brother Charles. Michael is survived by his lovely wife, Noreen, sister Kathy Sikes (Dr. Randy Sikes, USMA 1970), brothers Jim (Ann), David (Barbara), and various nieces and nephews. To his 26th Company Mates, Michael was one of the special people who will never leave us. Farewell and following seas our friend.
A memorial service is held on October 21, 2025, followed by internment at the Georgia National Cemetery. Celebration of Michael’s Life was held at the Olde Town Athletic Club following internment. Memorial donations can be made directly to Tunnel 2 Towers Foundation 2(t2t.org).
