

Richard ‘Dick’ Hammond Lewis, Jr., age 81, of Marietta, GA passed away peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, August 20, 2026. He was born on March 8, 1945 in Waycross, GA to Richard Hammond Lewis, Sr. and Elizabeth Lewis Moorman. He graduated from Coffee County High School in Douglas, GA where he lettered in golf, basketball and baseball. He went on to study at Mercer University for a year before returning home to South Georgia College to play on the golf team that finished 3rd in the National Junior College Championship. He earned a degree in accounting from the University of Georgia, served a 4 year stint in the Navy, and followed that up with a Master’s Degree in Accounting from Georgia State University. For most of his career, he was a partner with Moore & Cubbedge. He retired from his Moore & Cubbedge family after 30+ years.
Dick’s greatest joy was his family. He loved his wife of 48 years, Carol; his two children and their spouses, Richard (Kim) and Katie (Jeremy); and his seven grandchildren, Addy, Cole, Hailey, Brady, Tori, Caroline, and Carter. He was happiest when spending time with them.
Dick was passionate about his interests including sports and politics. He enjoyed playing golf, watching Georgia football and watching his kids and grandkids play any sport during which he was known to ‘encourage the referees/umpires to do better’. He was also a great philanthropist and friend, giving freely of his time and resources as an active member of Johnson Ferry Baptist Church, and the Tommy Nobis Center - where he spent 18 years in various leadership roles and on the Board of Directors, including Chairman of the Board - along with being on the Board at MUST Ministries.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard Hammond Lewis, Sr. and Elizabeth Lewis Moorman; his stepfather, Ross Moorman; his brothers, Frank Lewis, Glenn Moorman, Clyde Moorman, and Larry Moorman; his brothers and sisters-in-law Joe Thompson (Betty) and Sarah Ann Evans (Bill).
In addition to his immediate family, he is survived by his brother, Greg Lewis (Pam); his sisters-in-law, Roberta Moorman, Sharon Moorman, and Debra Moorman; his brother-in-law Glenn Thompson (Wanda); his nephews, Mike Gowen (Doralee), Rhett Lewis (Lisa), Ross Moorman (Lisa), Spence Moorman (Pam), Rusty Moorman (Amanda), Jonathan Moorman (Melissa), Frank Thompson (Faye), David Evans (Missy), and Cline Thompson (Meredith); his nieces, Meghan Lewis, Rhonda Moorman, Heidi Moorman (Greg), Jennifer Moorman (Jason), Alex Mullins (Richard), Beth Martin, Jennie McCain (Jeff), Becca Smith (Frank), Julie Martz (Garrett), Mariann Parker, and Ashley Hodges (Ben); as well as many great nephews and nieces.
A funeral service will be held at 1 pm on Thursday, September 3rd, 2026, at Johnson Ferry Baptist Church in Marietta. Following the service, please join the family for a reception in the Magnolia Room at the church.
