Don, as everyone called him, was born in Blackshear, Ga and spent his childhood in Adel, Ga.
Don joined the Army in Adel, Ga in 1954. After leaving the army, he moved to south Florida where he met his sweetheart Shirley. She was a senior in high school and her daddy wasn’t too happy that Don was few years older than her. But, as soon as she graduated in 1961, they were married the very next day and were married 64 wonderful years before his passing.
After the wedding they moved to Denver, CO for a short time and then to Riverside, CA. They didn’t stay long before they moved in 1967 to call GA their home for the remainder of his life. He was a resident of Acworth, GA for 57 years.
Don didn’t have very many hobbies, but he loved to fish. He had a boat he barely put in the water, but he had it if he wanted it. And he would let everyone know he had over 40 rods and 5 tackle boxes.
He also loved watching his grandchildren Aaron and Haley play sports. He was always at the baseball field with Aaron or always at the softball field or tennis courts with Haley.
Another one of his loves was the Air Force. He joined the Air Force Reserves and retired from the reserves at the age of 60 because they would not let him reenlist because of his age. That was the only thing stopping him. Then came another special joy in his life: great grandchildren. He didn’t have much of an expression most of the time, but when Knox and Ryleigh Jo came around he had a smile that you could see a mile away. He always loved seeing his “little ones” as he called them.
Although Don, Dad, and most of all; Papa is gone, he will live in our hearts forever.
He is survived by his wife Shirley; his daughter Michele (Clay); grandson Aaron (Kelsey); great grandchildren Knox & Ryleigh Jo; granddaughter Haley (Cassi) Brothers: Bill (Joan),Terry (Lindsay), Dwain.
He is preceded in death by his father Mack Lavell Proctor; mother Eula Mae Phelps; step-father Lester Mitchell Phelps; and sister in law Dorothy Proctor.
Don's family will receive friends on Monday, December 1st, 2025, 1 hour before his funeral service. Following Don's funeral service, his committal will be on the grounds of Georgia Memorial Park Cemetery, with Retiree Burial Honors, from the U.S. Air Force.
