Born February 12, 1930 in Jersey City, NJ to Leon J. Bonstein and Julia M. Bonstein, Mr. Bonstein was an only child. He was a graduate of Snyder High School, Jersey City, NJ, and he received a bachelor’s degree from Rutgers University. He proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War as an officer. Mr. Bonstein worked nearly 35 years for Standard Oil/Esso/Exxon in various management and executive capacities, ultimately working as an internal management consultant. One highlight of his career was to establish a data center in Scandinavia, during which time he and his family lived for nearly two years in the Stockholm suburbs; they had the opportunity at that time to travel throughout Europe. After returning to the United States, he and his family lived in and around Westfield, NJ, and later in Savannah, Villa Rica and Marietta, Georgia. He loved life in all its dimensions, and always had a beaming smile on his face. He especially loved spending time with his family and friends. He managed Little League teams. He traveled extensively throughout the world for business and for pleasure. He also enjoyed sports, especially baseball, and he became an avid Atlanta Braves fan. He was a golfer for many years, and he scored three holes in one. He enjoyed music and going to concerts, and he was a prolific reader. In later years, he demonstrated his skills at bean bag toss and Wii bowling, where his team won an international competition. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife and companion of 66 years, Suzanne N. Bonstein, also hailing from Jersey City. The couple had four sons, five grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Mr. Bonstein was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, Marietta, Georgia.
Besides his wife Suzanne (Sue), survivors include his sons Robert G. Jr, (Linda) Bonstein, Jr. of Marietta, Georgia; William (Kim) Bonstein of Chester, NJ. Surviving grandchildren include Kristen Bonstein (Ryan Dowd) of Boston, Massachusetts; Laine Bonstein (Alex Papadopoulos) of Missoula, MT; Robert Bonstein, III (Mollie Chen) of Brooklyn, New York; Megan Christ (Elliott) of Brooklyn, New York; and Devon Bonstein of Chicago, IL; In addition, he is survived by four great-grandchildren, Wayne and Moira Dowd of Boston, Massachusetts, Lydia Christ of Brooklyn, NY and Lilly C. Bonstein, also of Brooklyn.
Preceding Mr. Bonstein in death besides his parents are sons Wayne and Craig Bonstein.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of H. M. Patterson & Son Canton Hill Chapel. A memorial service with a reception to follow will be held at Patterson’s Canton Hill 1157 Old Canton Road, Marietta, GA 30068, on Wednesday, November 21st beginning at 11 AM. A second memorial gathering and interment will be held in Westfield, NJ at a date and time to be specified later.
